Happy Birthday Rahul Gandhi: Today is the birthday of Rahul Gandhi, son of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, grandson of India's first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and great-grandson of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Rahul Gandhi was born on 19 June 1970 in Delhi. He spent his early childhood in Delhi, the political center of India, and the city of Dehradun, located between the Himalayan valley and the Shivaliks.

Rahul Gandhi attended St Columba's School, Delhi from 1981 to 1983 before entering The Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. After Indira Gandhi's assassination, Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka were home-schooled for security reasons.

 

In 1989, Rahul entered St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and after a year he went to Harvard University. When Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991, he was shifted to Rollins College in Florida, USA for security reasons. Rahul had to use the name 'Raul Vinci' to keep his identity a secret.

Rahul Gandhi has faced two biggest tragedies in his life so far. When he was only 14 years old, his grandmother i.e. Indira Gandhi was assassinated. When he turned 21, his father Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991.

 

When Rahul Gandhi entered politics

 

Rahul Gandhi entered Indian politics in March 2004. Contesting from his father Rajiv Gandhi's constituency of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi won a landslide victory. He got more than one lakh votes.

 

During the reorganization of the party secretariats, Rahul Gandhi was appointed as the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee on 24 September.

 

Rahul Gandhi also took charge of the National Students Union of India and the Indian Youth Congress.

 

In the 2009 general elections, Rahul Gandhi retained his Lok Sabha seat from the Amethi constituency.

 

In January 2013, he was appointed as the Vice President of the Indian National Congress.

 

On 11 May 2011, he was arrested by the police for extending support to the protesting farmers.

 

In the 2014 general elections, Rahul Gandhi retained his Lok Sabha seat from the Amethi constituency.

 

In December 2017, with his hard work and dedication, he achieved the position of the President of the Indian National Congress.

 

On 3 July 2019, Rahul Gandhi officially resigned as Congress President after losing the Lok Sabha elections.
