RG Kar Doctor Case: Will Sanjay Roy get life imprisonment or a death sentence? The court will pronounce the sentence on the culprit in the RG Kar case in the afternoon.

The sentence will be announced today in the RG Kar case of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. A Kolkata court will pronounce the sentence this afternoon to Sanjay Roy, who was convicted in the case of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The sections under which Roy has been convicted carry a minimum punishment of life imprisonment, while the maximum punishment is death.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah Court on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy of raping and murdering a postgraduate trainee female doctor at the hospital on August 9 last year. This heinous crime had sparked outrage across the country and protests continued for a long time.

 

Was arrested on August 10, 2024

 

Sanjay was arrested on August 10, 2024, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital. The judge convicted him under sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

 

Provision of punishment

 

Section 64 (rape) of the IPC provides for a minimum sentence of 10 years, which may extend to life imprisonment. Section 66 provides for a minimum sentence of 20 years and may extend to life imprisonment. Section 103(1) (murder) of the IPC provides for death penalty or life imprisonment.

 

The investigation was transferred to CBI.

 

The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The judge said that Roy's statement would be heard at 12.30 pm and the sentence would be pronounced after that. During the verdict on Saturday, Roy claimed in the court that he had been framed.
