The crash site was officially kept secret, to keep it out of reach of divers and to be properly documented. The cargo ship Ironton can be seen at the bottom of the lake in a video released by the searchers. However, no human remains have been seen on the ship.

Several organizations have worked together to search for the wreckage. It also includes the Ocean Exploration Trust, which was founded by Robert Ballard. The same organization also unearthed the sunken wreckage of the Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck. According to an estimate, about 200 ships have sunk within the boundaries of the century. It is said that the decade of 1800 used to be very busy from the point of view of the lake business. During this time thousands of schooners and hundreds of steamers carried cargo and passengers between bustling port cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland.
