Violence in Manipur is not taking the name of stopping. As soon as the government and the common people feel that the tension has calmed down. Similarly, another incident comes to the fore. Now in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, a mob torched two buses used by security forces. No casualty has been reported during this period.
Officials said on Wednesday that the incident took place when the buses were coming from Dimapur on Tuesday evening. Violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities has been on the rise. A group of violent people stopped Manipur buses at Sapormina and told the bus driver that they wanted to see if any member of the other community was sitting.
He further said that only then did some people in the crowd set the buses on fire. However, there was no news of the loss of life during this period.
Things got worse since May
The clashes began after a 'tribal solidarity march' was organized in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Manipur. At least more than 160 people have lost their lives in the state since then.
the violence started like this
Tension started in the Churachandpur district. It is about 63 kilometers to the south of the capital Imphal. Kuki tribals are more in this district. On April 28, The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum announced an eight-hour bandh in Churachandpur to protest against the government land survey. In no time, this bandh took a violent form. The same night, miscreants set the forest department office on fire in the Tuibong area. In the violence of 27-28 April, mainly the police and the Kuki tribals were face to face.
Exactly on the fifth day i.e. on May 3, the All Tribal Students' Union of Manipur took out 'Adivasi Ekta March'. It was against the grant of ST status to the Meitei community. From here the situation got worse. The people of the Meitei community stood up against this demonstration of the tribals. There were three sides to the fight.
On one side were the people of the Meitei community and on the other side were the people of the Kuki and Naga community. Within no time, the whole state started burning in the fire of this violence. A rally of Chief Minister Biren Singh was to be held in Churachandpur on May 4. Complete preparations were done, but the miscreants set fire to the tents and the program venue in the night itself. CM's program was postponed.
