India did not participate during the voting process of a resolution brought in the United Nations General Assembly regarding the restoration of peace in Ukraine. India questioned whether the world was 'anywhere near a possible solution' for both Russia and Ukraine after a year of the Ukrainian conflict.
32 countries distanced themselves from the voting process
Along with India, 32 countries abstained during the voting process, including China. In the 193-member General Assembly, 141 votes were in favor of the proposal and seven were against it. The resolution was titled 'A Comprehensive, Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine'. The General Assembly has met six times over the past year in this emergency special session on Ukraine.
Russia-Ukraine war completes one year
Let us tell you, Russia attacked Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Today one year of this war has been completed. During this year, the United Nations General Assembly, Security Council, and Human Rights Council have repeatedly condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine and underlined the commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
India asked sharp questions to the world
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said, “As the General Assembly marks one year of the Ukrainian conflict, it is important that we ask ourselves some relevant questions. Are we close to a possible solution acceptable to both sides? Can any process that involves neither side ever lead to a credible and meaningful solution? Has the United Nations system, and in particular its key organ, the United Nations Security Council, based on its 1945 world construction, become ineffective in addressing contemporary challenges to global peace and security?
India is worried about the situation in Ukraine
Kamboj stressed that India is concerned about the situation in Ukraine. The conflict resulted in the loss of many lives and the displacement of millions, who were forced to seek refuge in neighboring countries. He said that reports of attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are also very worrying.
the problem will be solved through dialogue
India has stayed away from UN resolutions on Ukraine and has consistently underlined the need to respect the UN Charter, international law, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. India has also urged that all efforts be made for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an immediate return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
An increase in enmity and violence is not in anyone's interest
Kamboj said that India has consistently advocated that no solution can ever be found at the cost of human lives. Underlining Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that 'this cannot be an era of war', he said that the increase of enmity and violence is not in anybody's interest. Instead, an immediate return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward."
