US response to China's antics: America deployed 2 warships in Taiwan, both armed with nuclear weapons; Beijing on the back foot

The US has given a very tough response to China, which is continuously putting military pressure on Taiwan. On Sunday, the US Navy deployed two of its extremely dangerous and highly advanced nuclear warships in the Gulf of Taiwan. Since the visit of US Parliament Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Chinese military has been conducting military exercises very close to Taiwan. Now for the first time, America has retaliated.

The special thing is that immediately after this action against America, China's attitude seems to be cooling down. When the American warship reached Taiwan Strait on Sunday, China said – we are monitoring the situation. There is no intention of increasing the tension.

What is China doing?

The PLA (People's Liberation Army or Army of China) has declared 6 'no entry zones' around Taiwan. That is, now no passenger plane or ship can reach Taiwan from these 6 routes. China has deployed its J-20 fighter jets and warships around Taiwan. China's military is conducting military drills in Taiwan's waters and airspace in the North, South-West, and South-East.

pressure on China

According to a report released on Sunday by the news agency Reuters, this is the first time in many years that the US has directly challenged China's military might. More importantly, America has deployed not one but two warships in this area. China is realizing for the first time that now the US Navy is ready to take the lead to help Taiwan.

Its effect was also seen in the statements of the Defense and Foreign Ministry of China. Both ministries said the same thing. "We do not want to escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait," the statement said. We are just doing military exercises. America should also desist from increasing tension. Taiwan is part of us.

The US Navy also responded after China's statement. He said – the Indian Ocean and its paths will not be allowed to be captured. It is for everyone and it will be kept free. We are ready for any action.

US-China conflict

The US restored relations with China in 1979. Diplomatic relations with Taiwan were severed. However, despite China's objection, America continued to supply arms to Taiwan. The US also supports the One China policy, but its policy is not clear on the issue of Taiwan.

For the time being, President Joe Biden seems to be walking out of this policy. He has said on several occasions that if China attacks Taiwan, America will come to its rescue. Biden continued to increase arms sales to US officials with Taiwan.

The effect of this was that China intensified its incursion into Taiwan's air and water area. China now has the world's largest navy and the US can send only a limited number of ships there.

If China occupied Taiwan, it would start showing dominance in the western Pacific Ocean. This could also threaten the US military base on Guam and the Hawaiian Islands.

What is the dispute between China and Taiwan?

China believes that Taiwan is its state, while Taiwan considers itself an independent country. To understand this conflict, one has to go to the time after the Second World War. At that time a war was going on in mainland of China between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang.

In 1949, under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the Chinese Communist Party won and the Kuomintang people left the mainland and moved to Taiwan. The naval strength of the Communists was negligible. Therefore Mao's army could not cross the sea and control Taiwan.

China claims that in 1992 an agreement was reached between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang Party of Taiwan. According to this, both sides are part of One China and will work together for national integration. However, the Kuomintang's main opposition, the Democratic Progressive Party, never agreed to the 1992 deal.

Xi Jinping made it clear in 2019 that he would merge Taiwan with China. He gave the formula of 'one country two systems for this. This is not acceptable to Taiwan and it wants complete independence and sovereignty.
