The election for the post of Vice President is to be held on August 6. The last date for enrollment in this is July 19. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA has fielded West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate. It is being told that Dhankhar will file his nomination tomorrow i.e. on Monday. The Biju Janata Dal and YSR Congress have declared their support for Dhankhar.
Dhankhar comes from the Jat community of Rajasthan. The BJP has played a big bet by making Dhankar, born in a farmer's family, its candidate. Apart from Rajasthan, the number of Jat communities is very high in West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi. Apart from this, Dhankar's hold in West Bengal is considered very strong.
He had a lot of conflicts with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while being the governor. Dhankar used to meet the common people directly in different parts of Bengal. This is the reason that the people of Bengal also like him very much. BJP can get the benefit of this in the coming elections.
Know about the first election
1. Members of both the Houses of Parliament vote: The Vice-President is elected by the system of proportional representation through an electoral college consisting of members of both the Houses of Parliament. Members of both the Houses of Parliament participate in it. In the Presidential election, MLAs vote along with the elected MPs, but in the Vice Presidential election, only the members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha can vote.
2. Nominated MPs can also cast votes: Nominated MPs cannot vote in the Presidential election, but it is not so in the Vice Presidential election. Such members can also vote in the Vice Presidential election. There are 12 nominated members in the Rajya Sabha. Right now three of these are vacant. However, these three seats can be filled before the Vice Presidential election.
Now know from the figures how many members will vote?
At present, the number of members in the Lok Sabha is complete. That means there are full 543 MPs. At the same time, there are a total of 245 members in the Rajya Sabha. There are 12 nominated MPs in them. At present eight seats are vacant. Of these, four were due to the dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, while one seat was left by Manik Saha, who became the new Chief Minister of Tripura. The seats of three other nominated members are also vacant. The government can fill the vacant seats for the nominated members before the Vice Presidential election.
In this context, the figures of Rajya Sabha voters for the Vice-President's election come to the fore. The first is that in the current situation, 237 Rajya Sabha MPs will vote in the election. Second, 240 members can vote. 240 members will vote when three vacancies of nominated members are filled.
Now let's look at the overall voter numbers. If 240 members of Rajya Sabha cast their votes, then the total number of voters will be 783, but if there are 237 voters of Rajya Sabha, then this figure will come down to 780.
How many votes are needed to win?
Right now, according to the number of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, two numbers of voters are coming out. A total of 783 votes can be cast in the first circumstance. In such a situation, the candidate would need 393 first preference votes to win. In the second case, if 780 votes are cast, the candidate needs 391 first preference votes to win.
Know how strong the BJP is in the next three points?
1. BJP's figures are sufficient: At present, the BJP has 303 members in the Lok Sabha, while there are 91 in the Rajya Sabha. Apart from these 91 in Rajya Sabha, five nominated members can also vote for BJP. In this way, the present-time BJP easily gets 394 votes. If the votes of five nominated members are added to this, then this number is becoming 399. BJP can easily win its Vice Presidential candidate Dhankhar on its strength.
2. Will make allies stronger: If allies are also included in this, then BJP will become stronger. At present, the BJP has the support of 31 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 16 in the Rajya Sabha. These include parties like JDU, RPI, Lok Jan Shakti Party, Apna Dal, AIADMK, and NPP. By adding their votes, BJP gets 446 votes. JDU, Apna Dal, and Jan Shakti Party have already declared their support for Dhankhar.
3. Many opposition parties can also get along: Some more parties like BJD, YSR Congress, BSP, and Shiromani Akali Dal have supported the NDA candidate in the presidential election. If these parties also support NDA candidates in the Vice Presidential election, the figure will become bigger.
BJD currently has 21 members in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, YSR Congress has 31, BSP has 11, and Shiromani Akali Dal has two members. If the votes of all these are added up, the BJP's figure will cross 500. BJP candidates can get 511 votes in the election. Meaning Dhankhar will get more votes than 393 or 391 votes fixed for victory.
What will happen to the opposition?
The opposition has nominated former Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva as its candidate for the vice-presidential election. Margaret has been a Congress MP. Originally from Karnataka, Margaret Alva served as the first woman governor of Uttarakhand from 6 August 2009 to 14 May 2012.
