The Durgapur gang rape case has raised political heat in West Bengal, and the Mamata Banerjee government is under fire. The opposition BJP staged protests over the matter. During the protests, BJP leaders leveled serious allegations against the Mamata government, accusing it of protecting the perpetrators instead of the victim.
"Mamata government is applying pressure"
West Bengal's Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari said, "Remove Trinamool, save the girl child, is the main slogan everywhere in Bengal. Trinamool must go. They have not supported the victim's family and have not yet submitted the medical report. They are not allowing the Leader of the Opposition to speak to the doctor. They even stopped the Women's Commission coming from Odisha. The private medical college administration called me at 8 a.m. and said, 'We are under pressure. Whose pressure? Pressure from Mamata Banerjee, pressure from Mamata Banerjee's police, or pressure from Mamata's goons?'
"Bengal is the most unsafe state in the country"
A statement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the Durgapur gang rape case is being widely criticized. BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh said, "Mamata Banerjee's statement is painful, unfortunate, and insulting. Instead of ensuring the safety of girls, the Mamata government is protecting criminals. Be it Sandeshkhali, RG Kar, or now Durgapur... NCRB data has proven that Bengal is the most unsafe state in the country."
"TMC has become synonymous with backward thinking."
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj launched a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee's statement, saying, "Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is justifying rape. She is saying that women should not go out late at night. The TMC government in Bengal has become synonymous with backward thinking." She said, "I want to ask Mamata Banerjee, she raises slogans of 'Maa, Mati, Manush'. But because of your insensitivity, misgovernance, and backward mentality, today in Bengal, 'Maa' is ashamed, 'Mati' is bleeding, and 'Manush' is in a bad state." I urge the Mamata Banerjee government and the Chief Minister herself to stop justifying rape and provide justice to the victim.
Mamata Banerjee raised questions about the student leaving the hostel late at night.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking on the alleged gang rape of an MBBS student in Durgapur, said, "There is zero tolerance in Bengal; we do not tolerate this at all. I also request students coming from outside to study here not to go out at night. Private colleges also have a responsibility to take care of their students. The incident is condemnable, but those who live in hostels have a system. I have asked the police to take strict action. No one will be spared."
Mamata Banerjee said, "She (the victim) was studying in a private medical college. Who is responsible for this? How did she get out at 12:30 in the night? Girls should not be allowed to go out (from the college) at night. They also have to protect themselves. It is a forest area there. The police are searching everyone."
