Chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav's confidence has increased after getting a regular place in the playing-11 during the current series against England. This left-arm wrist spinner believes that due to continuous opportunities, he is understanding the game better and has become stronger than before. Kuldeep made his Test debut in Dharamshala in 2017 and in the last seven years, he has played only 12 Test matches, four of which have been played consecutively during the current series against England. On the first day of the fifth Test, Kuldeep destroyed England's batting and took five wickets.
He said, 'If you play regularly then you are full of confidence about your bowling. Sports awareness also comes with it. It is very important to play regularly as it keeps your bowling sharp.
29-year-old Kuldeep hopes that he will be able to take more wickets in the second innings. He has taken 17 wickets in this series so far. In the last few years, fewer opportunities in Tests, then a decline in form and subsequent surgery for a knee injury significantly affected Kuldeep's career. However, he did not give up and changed his technique. He said, 'It was quite challenging in the beginning. I changed my actions. It took six to eight months to find that rhythm. Now things are completely ready and I am enjoying it. In Ranchi, I also changed my run-up and tried to reach the crease faster because it was a slow surface. I practice it regularly.
Kuldeep had bowled 15 overs till the lunch break on the first day. He says that he has been able to do this only because of his fitness. Following knee surgery in September 2021, Kuldeep changed his routine to improve his fitness, increasing his ball speed and straightening out his run-ups. After taking five wickets to bowl out England for 218 runs on a flat pitch, Kuldeep said that it is because of his work on fitness that he is now successful in bowling long spells.
He said, 'Bowling is about fitness. I have worked a lot on my fitness in the last 18 months. Due to improvement in fitness, I was able to make some changes in my bowling. I am doing some special things on my fitness which is allowing me to bowl longer spells. I also bowled long spells in Rajkot (12 overs in the first innings) and Ranchi (14 overs in the second innings). I am used to it.'
Kuldeep is getting more turn on flat surfaces than other spinners. The ball bowled to Jack Crowley turned so much that he missed the line and was clean bowled. The ball turned from the fifth off stump and uprooted the leg stump of the England opener. Kuldeep said- I was using the airflow well on both sides. I am very happy that we were able to bowl them out for 218 because it is a good wicket. As a spinner, you focus on length and try to hit at good lengths. Many times you change your plan according to the situation. If you are getting the benefit of airflow, you will also have to think about the line. The more you play, the easier it becomes to control. Speed also matters. If you bowl at a certain pace and change your pace, it becomes difficult for the batsmen.
Dharamshala is a special place for Kuldeep because he made his Test cricket debut here in 2017. After a successful start, Kuldeep's career did not rise to great heights that fast. However now it seems that she has found the best version of herself. “It was an interesting period,” he said. It has been seven years since the debut. I have matured a lot in my bowling. I understand my game better now. I know how to read the wicket. Dharamsala's wicket is good. Given the cold weather, there is no possibility of it breaking. It was cold in the first hour. The ball was gripping.
Kuldeep and Ashwin shared a funny moment after England were all out soon after tea. Considering Ashwin was playing his 100th Test, Kuldeep wanted him to keep the ball. However, Ashwin did not want to do this. Ashwin had also taken four wickets in this match and Kuldeep felt that because of taking four wickets in the 100th Test, the ball should be given to the veteran spinner. However, Ashwin refused and both were seen laughing and hugging each other. Kuldeep told what Ashwin had said then. On exchanging the balls, Kuldeep said, 'Ash Bhai told me that I have 35 balls and asked me to keep it.' Ashwin has taken five wickets in an innings 35 times in Tests and he was telling this to Kuldeep.
