A major change is being seen in West Bengal's ruling party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), before the 2026 assembly elections. To enhance the party's image in Delhi and establish a strong foothold in the India alliance, Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee devised a new strategy.
According to NDTV, under this strategy, a new and strong team will be formed in Delhi, which will work with Abhishek Banerjee. But after Mamata Banerjee's 12-minute online meeting with her MPs, this strategy failed.
Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee had planned to remove the party's chief whip, Kalyan Banerjee, and parliamentary party leader Sudip Banerjee from their posts.
But the intention was to raise only Kalyan Banerjee's case in the meeting. But as soon as Mamata Banerjee questioned Kalyan Banerjee's role and talked about giving new responsibility to Kakoli Dastidar, Kalyan Banerjee got angry. He immediately resigned and made sharp comments publicly.
Abhishek Banerjee declared leader of the parliamentary party
This move by Kalyan Banerjee spoiled all the plans of the TMC. After his resignation, the party also removed Sudip Banerjee from the post of leader of the parliamentary party in Lok Sabha. After this, Abhishek Banerjee was declared the leader of the parliamentary party.
Sources say that Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee are unhappy with this whole development. Nevertheless, Abhishek Banerjee tried to persuade Kalyan Banerjee and said that he would meet him in Delhi soon.
Abhishek Banerjee is considered to be the political heir of Mamata Banerjee. Now he will lead the party in Delhi and coordinate with the India Alliance. On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee will continue to be the chief ministerial face of the party in Bengal.
NDTV has quoted sources as saying that at one time, there were reports of differences between Mamata and Abhishek, but now both are on the same page. Their recent meeting is also proof of this.
What did Kalyan Banerjee say?
Kalyan Banerjee expressed his displeasure while talking to the media. He said, "I am being blamed for the lack of coordination among MPs. 'Didi' said in a virtual meeting that there is a lack of coordination among MPs, and the blame was put on me. That is why I resigned from the post of Chief Whip."
He further said, "Those who were made MPs by Mamata Banerjee do not even come to the Lok Sabha. South Kolkata, Barrackpore, Bankura, North Kolkata... no one is seen in Parliament. What can I do in this? What is my fault? Why am I blamed for everything?"
