America is facing a crisis of doctors. This affects the rural areas as well as the urban areas. There are long queues at the doctor's. On the other hand, appointments have to be taken months in advance to consult some doctors. Not only this, some people are getting seriously ill due to the non-availability of timely treatment.
Actually, after Corona, this crisis started deepening. There are currently 10.73 lakh doctors in the US. Out of this, about 4 lakh doctors are retiring this year. According to data published in 2020 by the Association of American Medical Colleges, there will be a shortage of 54,100 to 1,39,000 doctors in the US by 2033. This shortfall will be for doctors in both the primary and intensive care sectors.
Dr. Stephen Frankel, a pulmonologist and the country's expert on clinical affairs, said that in a September 2021 report from the Kaiser Family Foundation, it has been said that 837 million people in America live in areas where even initial treatment is not available. More than 14,800 doctors are needed to overcome this.
To address this shortcoming, the US government is not recruiting new ones. To meet the shortfall, the government should provide debt relief to the students studying medicine, so that they can easily complete the course. The care team should be expanded and telemedicine use.
5.4% of doctors are black
Racial discrimination is also one of the reasons for the decrease in the number of doctors. According to 2021 figures from the Journal of General Internal Medicine, only 5.4% of the total number of doctors in the US are black. Of these, 2.6% are males and 2.8% are females.
