Russia has resumed shelling near Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. A local official gave this information on Wednesday. Regional governor Valentin Reznichenko said the city of Nikopol, on the opposite bank of the Dnieper River, was fired from Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
"There are fires and other things at (the plant) that we have to prepare the local population for the consequences of a nuclear threat," Reznichenko said.
Authorities have distributed iodine tablets to residents in recent days to help protect them in the event of a radiation leak.
A second Russian attack on Wednesday hit Enerhodar, where the power plant is located, according to ex-occupation Mayor Dmitry Orlov. On the Telegram messaging app, he said, 'The workers of communal and other services do not have time to complete the emergency and restoration work, because even one shelling makes their work void.'
The Russian side blamed the Ukrainians. Vladimir Rogov, the head of the Russian-founded Enerhodar administration, said on Telegram that heavy Ukrainian fighting had caused the city's blackout and that Russia's defense ministry blamed the outage on Ukrainian forces attacking the power substation.
Alexander Starukh of the Zaporizhzhya regional government said Russian rockets struck the village of Mala Tokmachka, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) northeast of Enerhodar, on Wednesday, killing three people and injuring five.
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi warned the UN Security Council on Tuesday that "something catastrophic could happen" in Zaporizhzhya.
The head of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, warned the UN Security Council on Tuesday that 'something very, very disastrous could happen at the Zaporizhzhya plant.' The IAEA urged Russia and Ukraine to establish a 'Nuclear Security and Security Protection Zone' around the plant.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Moscow would continue its military action in Ukraine until its objectives were achieved.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's presidential office said three civilians were killed in Russian shelling in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine.
