Ukraine has started using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to recognize the face of its enemies during the war. To identify Russian attackers, Ukraine is taking the help of American company Clearview AI's facial recognition search engine. With this technique, civilians and soldiers killed in battle can be identified separately.
Clearview CEO Hon Ton-Thato said that Ukraine's Defense Ministry has been using our technology since last Saturday. Hon said- There are a total of more than 1 crore photos in our database. Of these, more than two million photos have been submitted from the Russian social media VKontakte. Our technology is effective in providing accurate face recognition even in case of damage and is easier than fingerprint matching.
The company gave its search engine to Ukraine for free
Clearview's technology is being used to reunite refugees with their families, identify Russian spies and expose fake social media posts related to the war. The company's advisor Lee Volosky said – the special thing is that Ukraine will not have to pay for the use of Clearview AI's search engine. We have made it available to him for free. With this technology, the Ukrainian force will be able to identify friends and foes at the checkpoint itself.
However, Ukraine's Defense Ministry has not yet responded to this claim. Earlier, a spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation said that they are looking into proposals from US-based AI companies such as Clearview.
Critics of technology are also present, said - one mistake can give death to someone
On the other hand, Albert Fox, CEO of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project in New York, says that an AI mistake can also cause the death of a civilian. He added that Clearview should never be used as a stand-alone source of identification.
When you engage such technology in combat, you have no control over how it is used and misused.
The company accused of infringement of privacy
Please note that Clearview primarily sells this technology only to US law enforcement agencies. The company is also being sued in the US for infringement of privacy rights. It has been accused of stealing photos from the Internet without permission.
Clearview argues that it collects the same data as Google Search. Nevertheless, many countries, including the UK and Australia, have deemed it legally illegal.
