Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market with its first foldable iPhone. According to reports attributed to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device is internally being referred to as the “iPhone Ultra” and could be unveiled alongside Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
However, Apple has not officially confirmed the foldable iPhone, so the reported launch timing and specifications should be treated as rumors and leaks.
Book-Style Design With Two Displays
The rumored foldable iPhone is expected to adopt a book-style folding design. Reports suggest that it could feature a 5.5-inch cover display, while unfolding the device may reveal a significantly larger 7.8-inch internal screen.
The larger display could provide an experience closer to an iPad, with Apple reportedly testing an iPad-style application layout designed to make better use of the expanded screen.
Touch ID Could Replace Face ID
One of the biggest rumored changes could involve biometric authentication.
Due to the space constraints associated with a thin foldable design, Apple is reportedly considering Touch ID instead of Face ID for the foldable iPhone. If implemented, this would mark a notable change from the Face ID system used across Apple's recent flagship iPhones.
Camera Setup May Skip a Telephoto Lens
The rumored iPhone Ultra is also expected to receive a different camera configuration from Apple's Pro models.
Reports suggest that the foldable device may not include a dedicated telephoto camera, although its primary camera is expected to offer strong image quality. The final camera specifications, however, remain unconfirmed.
Could Apple Launch the Foldable iPhone Alongside iPhone 18 Pro?
The biggest question is when Apple's first foldable iPhone will arrive. Current reports point to a September launch window, potentially alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
If Apple does introduce the device this year, it would mark the company's entry into an increasingly competitive foldable smartphone market dominated by manufacturers such as Samsung, Google and Chinese smartphone brands.
