ChatGPT, Claude, Grok Down: Major Global AI Outage Hits Users Worldwide

Users around the world reported difficulties accessing some of the biggest generative AI platforms on September 3, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok all experiencing service disruptions around the same period.

 

The simultaneous problems triggered a sharp increase in outage reports on Downdetector, highlighting how heavily consumers and businesses now depend on AI services for work, coding, research and everyday tasks.

 

Thousands of ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Reports Recorded

 

According to Downdetector figures cited in reports, India saw more than 2,800 ChatGPT problem reports, around 170 reports for Claude and more than 40 reports for Grok by approximately 8:20 PM IST.

 

The disruption appeared even larger in the United States. At around the same time, Downdetector recorded more than 35,000 ChatGPT reports, over 1,400 Claude reports and more than 1,200 Grok reports.

 

These numbers represent reports submitted to Downdetector and should not be interpreted as an exact count of users who lost access.

 

OpenAI Confirms Elevated Errors Across ChatGPT and Codex

 

OpenAI acknowledged that users were experiencing problems with ChatGPT and Codex.

 

The company reported elevated error rates across ChatGPT and Codex and said it was investigating the affected services. OpenAI’s service-status history also records an APAC incident involving ChatGPT, Work, image generation, file uploads, Voice and Codex Cloud.

 

The outage came at a particularly notable moment for OpenAI, which was simultaneously promoting its new GPT-6 Astra model.

 

OpenAI Teases Astra as Outages Unfold

 

While users were reporting problems with ChatGPT, the company also shared a cryptic video on X featuring stars moving and aligning into a formation.

 

The post was accompanied by the phrase “The stars are almost aligned,” adding to speculation surrounding OpenAI’s Astra announcement.

 

OpenAI subsequently launched GPT-6 Astra, describing it as a major advance in areas including computer and browser use. The company has also highlighted Astra's capabilities across cybersecurity, software engineering, science and professional work.

 

The timing of the outage and product launch attracted considerable attention, although there is no confirmed evidence that the Astra launch caused the ChatGPT disruption.

 

Claude Also Experienced Elevated Error Rates

 

Anthropic’s Claude experienced problems during the same period.

 

Reports indicated that elevated error rates initially affected several Claude models. Anthropic later said that most affected models had returned to normal error rates, with Claude Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 remaining affected at that stage.

The simultaneous disruption across competing AI platforms made the incident particularly notable, although the available information does not establish a single common technical cause.

 

Grok Confirms Service Problems

 

Elon Musk’s xAI also acknowledged problems affecting Grok.
