DC vs GT: What was Shubman Gill thinking when David Miller didn't take the single? The captain himself reveals the answer.

The Delhi Capitals team required 2 runs for victory off the final two deliveries of their match against the Gujarat Titans. David Miller was on strike, and everyone held their breath; however, what unfolded next left everyone stunned.

Miller had the opportunity to take a single and level the score—thereby tying the match—but he declined to hand the strike over to his partner, Kuldeep Yadav, and thus decided against taking the single run. On the very next delivery, however, Kuldeep was run out, and the Delhi team consequently lost the match by a mere 1 run. The South African batter Miller’s decision not to take the single proved to be a major.

Meanwhile, by defeating DC in this manner, the Gujarat team secured their first victory of the season. Following this win, Captain Shubman Gill appeared visibly delighted. In the post-match interview, he discussed the moment when their chances of winning began to materialize. He also revealed the strategy he and his bowler devised just before the final delivery.

What did Shubman Gill say after winning the match?

Specifically, when GT Captain Shubman Gill was asked during the post-match presentation about David Miller’s decision not to take a single on the fifth delivery of the 20th over, he remarked: “Certainly, all three matches we have played so far have gone down to the final over. However, it feels incredibly gratifying to finally cross the finish line and secure a victory in this match.”

Gill reveals the strategy ahead of the final delivery

Shedding light on his conversation with Prasidh Krishna just before the final ball, Captain Gill stated:

“I felt that we had a chance to win. No, we were simply debating whether to bowl a yorker or a slower delivery. Given the way the pitch was playing, we decided that if a slower ball landed in the right spot, it would be extremely difficult for the batter to hit a boundary off it.”

Fielding makes a significant difference.

The GT team captain believes that fielding also plays a crucial role in influencing the outcome of a match. Gill affirmed: “Yes, absolutely (regarding the fielding)—it certainly made a difference. That is, of course, barring those overthrows and boundaries that I (mistakenly) conceded.” "I feel that those 5-6 runs in the field make a huge difference—especially in a match that you end up winning by just one run. Here, every effort, every misfield, and every good piece of fielding counts.

Gill further added:

‘We were very happy after putting up a total of 210 runs. We always felt that, on this wicket, we were 10–15 runs above the par score. Even when we were batting during the death overs, hitting big shots wasn’t easy because the wicket was on the slower side. We felt that if we bowled well, we should be able to win this match. Now, I just need to get some sleep and see how I feel when I wake up tomorrow morning.’" — Shubman Gill
