Missing important emails because they keep landing in the Spam folder? Whether it's a job offer, banking alert, office communication, or business email, Gmail's spam filter can sometimes mistakenly flag genuine messages. Fortunately, you can fix the issue in just a few minutes by changing a few settings.
Why Do Important Gmail Emails Go to Spam?
Gmail uses AI-powered filters to block unwanted messages. However, legitimate emails may occasionally be marked as spam due to sender reputation, missing contact information, or Gmail's automated filtering system. This can cause users to miss critical updates and professional communications.
How to Stop Emails from Going to Spam on Gmail (Computer)
1. Mark the Email as 'Not Spam'
If a trusted email has been sent to your Spam folder:
Open Gmail on your computer.
Click More from the left menu and open the Spam folder.
Select the email.
Click Not spam at the top.
Doing this helps Gmail recognize future emails from the same sender as safe.
2. Save the Sender to Google Contacts
Google generally treats emails from saved contacts as trustworthy.
Follow these steps:
Open Google Contacts.
Click Create Contact.
Enter the sender's name and email address.
Click Save.
3. Create a Gmail Filter
For a permanent solution:
Open Gmail on a computer.
Click the Show Search Options icon in the search bar.
Enter the sender's email address in the From field.
Click Create Filter.
Select Never send it to Spam.
Click Create Filter to save.
This ensures future emails from that address are delivered directly to your Inbox.
How to Fix the Spam Issue on Android and iPhone
Move Emails Out of Spam
Open the Gmail app.
Go to Menu > Spam.
Open the email.
Tap the More menu.
Select Report not spam.
Save the Sender to Contacts
Open your phone's Contacts app.
Tap Add Contact.
Enter the sender's details.
Save the contact.
If your phone doesn't have the Contacts app installed, you can download it from your device's app store.
Important Note for Gmail Users
According to Google, Gmail filters can only be created using the desktop version of Gmail. Android and iPhone users cannot create filters directly from the mobile app. If you want to permanently prevent emails from a specific sender from going to Spam, you'll need to log into Gmail on a computer and create a filter.
