India and Zimbabwe are set to meet in women’s international cricket for the first time as the teams begin their three-match T20 International series in Raipur on Friday, October 16. The match will start at 7:00 PM IST at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, marking the beginning of Smriti Mandhana’s first series as India’s full-time captain.

The opening fixture is historic for both teams, with the series providing Zimbabwe an opportunity to test itself against a leading international side and India a chance to build momentum under new leadership. The tour will also include three One-Day Internationals in Vadodara later this month.

India vs Zimbabwe Women 1st T20I: Match Details

Match: India Women vs Zimbabwe Women, 1st T20I

Date: Friday, October 16, 2026

Time: 7:00 PM IST

Venue: Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, Raipur

India captain: Smriti Mandhana

India vice-captain: Shafali Verma

Series: Three T20Is followed by three ODIs

According to the BCCI’s announced schedule, the second and third T20Is will take place on October 18 and 20, respectively, with all three matches being held in Raipur.

Smriti Mandhana Begins a New Chapter as India Captain

The series marks an important moment for Mandhana, who takes charge of the Indian women’s team as its full-time captain. She will be supported by vice-captain Shafali Verma, while experienced players such as Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma add depth to the squad.

Mandhana’s immediate challenge will be to establish her leadership approach while maintaining India’s competitive standards. The series also offers an opportunity to assess combinations and give players valuable international experience.

India will be keen to make a strong start, particularly with the team preparing for future international assignments. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will look to challenge the hosts and build on the confidence gained from recent performances in the 50-over format.

Shafali Verma and Sree Charani Among India’s Key Players

Shafali Verma is one of the players to watch in the opening T20I. As vice-captain, she will have responsibilities both as a senior member of the leadership group and as an aggressive batter at the top of the order.

Her ability to score quickly during the powerplay could help India establish early momentum. A strong start from the opening batters would put pressure on Zimbabwe’s bowling attack.

With the ball, Sree Charani is another player to watch. Her left-arm spin and ability to take wickets could be important in controlling the middle overs. India will also have options such as Deepti Sharma and Prema Rawat to provide variety in the spin department.

Zimbabwe Women Look to Challenge India

Zimbabwe will be led by Josephine Nkomo and will aim to make the most of this historic bilateral encounter. Despite facing a challenging run of results in T20 internationals during 2026, the visitors will be looking for a fresh start against India.

Batter Kelis Ndhlovu is one of Zimbabwe’s important players. Her recent performances, including a 63-run innings against the West Indies, demonstrate her ability to contribute with the bat.

Mitchell Mavunga is another player who could have a role in Zimbabwe’s bowling plans. The visitors will need disciplined bowling, effective fielding and partnerships with the bat to compete against India.

Who Could Bat at No. 3 for India?

With Jemimah Rodrigues unavailable as she recovers from a hamstring injury, India may use the series to test alternatives at the No. 3 position.

Anushka Sharma and Niki Prasad are among the options in the squad. Both could be considered depending on the team’s preferred batting combination and match conditions.

The absence of Rodrigues also gives the management an opportunity to assess the squad’s depth ahead of future competitions. However, the final batting order and playing XI will be confirmed closer to the match.

Shreyanka Patil is also unavailable for the series, meaning India may consider other options in the bowling unit. Prema Rawat is among the players who could come into contention.

Raipur Pitch Report: Batters Could Have an Advantage

The surface at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium has supported competitive batting in previous matches. India’s successful chase of a target of 209 against New Zealand in a men’s T20I earlier in 2026 demonstrated that substantial totals can be chased at the venue.

The teams will nevertheless need to assess the conditions on match day. The behaviour of the pitch, the amount of early movement and any dew under lights could influence decisions at the toss.

A good start in the powerplay may be important, but bowlers who vary their pace and maintain accurate lines could still create opportunities.

Raipur Weather Report for IND-W vs ZIM-W 1st T20I

The forecast provided ahead of the match suggests warm conditions during the day, with temperatures expected to ease in the evening. Clear weather would be favourable for a full contest, although conditions can change and should be checked again closer to the start.

Dew could become a factor during the second innings, potentially influencing bowling grip and fielding. The toss may therefore play a role in the teams’ tactical decisions.
