In a landmark step towards sustainable transportation, India has launched its first hydrogen fuel cell train, marking a major milestone in the country's clean energy journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the eco-friendly train from Jind, Haryana, on July 17, 2026, making India one of the few countries to operate hydrogen-powered passenger rail services.
Running on hydrogen fuel instead of diesel or conventional electricity, the train produces water as its only emission, significantly reducing carbon pollution and supporting Indian Railways' green mobility mission.
India's First Hydrogen Train Route
The hydrogen-powered train will initially operate on the 89-kilometre Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana. The project serves as a pilot for Indian Railways' future plans to expand hydrogen-powered train services across the country.
How Does India's Hydrogen Train Work?
Unlike conventional trains, this modern rail service uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity for propulsion.
Key Benefits
Near-zero carbon emissions
Water is the only by-product
Reduced dependence on fossil fuels
Quieter and cleaner operation
Environment-friendly transportation
The train has a maximum speed of around 110 km/h, while its operational speed will remain between 70–75 km/h to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey.
Hydrogen Train Features
India's first hydrogen train comes equipped with several advanced features designed for safety, comfort, and efficiency.
Highlights
10-coach train configuration
2 power coaches
8 passenger coaches
Capacity to accommodate 2,500–2,600 passengers
Advanced hydrogen leak detection system
Modern onboard safety monitoring
Developed under the 'Make in India' initiative
The indigenous technology highlights India's growing capabilities in green transportation and railway innovation.
Hydrogen Train Ticket Price
To encourage public adoption, Indian Railways has kept fares highly affordable.
Expected Ticket Fare: ₹5 to ₹25
The low ticket pricing makes the hydrogen train an economical travel option while promoting sustainable mobility.
Why India's Hydrogen Train Is a Historic Achievement
The launch places India among a select group of countries operating hydrogen-powered passenger trains. The project supports the government's broader goals of reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and modernizing railway infrastructure.
Indian Railways also plans to introduce hydrogen-powered technology on additional routes in the coming years, accelerating India's transition toward cleaner and greener public transport.
A New Era for Indian Railways
The successful launch of India's first hydrogen fuel cell train marks the beginning of a new chapter in railway transportation. Combining zero-emission technology, affordable fares, indigenous innovation, and modern safety systems, the project demonstrates India's commitment to sustainable development and next-generation rail travel.
