IPL 2025: All 12 marquee players sold, from Pant to Shreyas-KL, big players were showered with money in the auction

In the mega auction of IPL 2025, bids were first placed on 12 marquee players. It included seven Indian and five foreign players. The first bid was placed on Arshdeep Singh. There was a fight between Delhi, Chennai, and Gujarat for him. Apart from this, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer created history. They became the players to touch the figure of 25+ crores.

 

What are marquee players?

 

Marquee players are those players on whom bids are placed first during the auction. These players are popular globally and most teams want to buy them. Usually, these players have also made a big name in international cricket. Before the IPL auction, all the teams give the names of the players to the BCCI, whom they want to buy in the mega auction. The big players whom most teams want to buy. They are kept on the list of marquee players. Usually, big bids are placed on marquee players and the most expensive player of the auction is also one of them. The same has happened in this year's auction.

 

Jos Buttler (England):

 

Jos Buttler's base price was Rs 2 crore and there was a competition between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans for him. Meanwhile, Lucknow Supergiants also joined the race and clashed with Gujarat. In the end, Gujarat bought Butler for Rs 15.75 crore. Butler was released by Rajasthan Royals.

 

Butler is one of the finest white-ball batsmen of this generation. He has 11,929 runs, eight centuries, and 83 half-centuries in 427 T20s. He has also won the T20 World Cup as captain for England. Butler made a name for himself in the IPL during his tenure with Rajasthan Royals (RR) from 2018 to 2024. For Rajasthan Royals since 2018, Butler scored 3,055 runs at an average of 41.84 and a strike rate of 147.79, including 7 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His best score was 124.

 

He is the third-highest run-scorer of the team so far. In IPL 2022, he was the top scorer of the tournament. He scored 863 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of over 149. These included four centuries and four half-centuries. His best score was 116. Last season, Buttler scored 359 runs in 11 matches at an average of 39.88, including two centuries. Buttler also represented Mumbai Indians (MI) from 2016-17, scoring 527 runs in 24 matches with one half-century. He won the title with them in 2017.

 

Shreyas Iyer (India):

 

Shreyas Iyer was bid for Rs 26.75 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. He was bought by the Punjab Kings. He can be seen captaining this team. He became the most expensive player in IPL auction history, but Rishabh Pant broke his record. Shreyas had surpassed Mitchell Starc, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders last year for Rs 24.75 crore. However, Pant left Shreyas behind.

 

First, there was a fight between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals for Shreyas. After this Kolkata withdrew the name and then Punjab Kings entered. Then there was a fight between Delhi and Punjab to buy him. In this way he crossed the mark of 20 crores and then Starc and 25 crores. Not only this, he also became the most expensive player in IPL. He is the first player in auction history for whom a bid of more than Rs 25 crore was made. After this, Pant was also bid for Rs 25+ crore.

 

In his IPL career, Iyer has scored 2,375 runs at an average of 31.67. His strike rate is 123.96 and he has scored 16 half-centuries. His best score is 96 runs. In his last season for KKR, he scored 351 runs in 15 matches at an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of over 146. These include two half-centuries.

 

Rishabh Pant (India):

 

Lucknow Super Giants team bought Pant for Rs 27 crore. For the first time since 2016, Pant will be seen playing for a team other than Delhi. Pant has been in great form recently. He scored a lot of runs after returning from a car accident last year. The Lucknow team can make him the captain. Pant has thus become the highest-priced player in IPL history. He has surpassed Shreyas Iyer in this matter, who was sold for Rs 26.75 crore a short while ago.

 

Pant has represented Delhi Capitals (DC) throughout his IPL career since 2016. During this, he has scored 3,284 runs in 110 matches for Delhi at an average of 35.31 with one century and 18 half-centuries. He was appointed as the captain of the team in 2021 and in the same season, he led his team to the playoffs.

 

Pant was a victim of a car accident in 2022. He made a comeback in the IPL this year. Pant was the highest run-scorer for Delhi in the year 2024. He scored 446 runs in 13 matches at an average of 40.54 and a strike rate of 155.40. These include three half-centuries and his best score was 88 not out.

 

Kagiso Rabada (South Africa):

 

South Africa's Kagiso Rabada landed whose base price was Rs 2 crore. Gujarat Titans bought this bowler for Rs 10.75 crore. Rabada used to play for Punjab earlier, but Punjab did not use RTM for Rabada. The South African fast bowler is one of the best in the world. He has taken 71 wickets in 65 T20 Internationals. He was part of the South African team that reached the final of the T20 World Cup this year and took 13 wickets in nine matches. Rabada has played T20 leagues and competitions around the world and has taken 264 wickets in 211 matches.

 

In the IPL, Rabada has represented Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. He has taken 117 wickets in 80 matches. With PBKS from 2022-2024, he took 30 wickets in 41 matches, while with DC from 2017-2021, he took 50 wickets in 76 matches. In 11 matches for Punjab Kings last season, he took 11 wickets at an average of 33.81.

 

Arshdeep Singh (India):

 

Punjab Kings used the Right to Match (RTM) card to buy fast bowler Arshdeep Singh for Rs 18 crore. The bid for Arshdeep was started by Chennai Super Kings and there was a battle between CSK and Delhi Capitals for some time to get him. Later Rajasthan and Gujarat also jumped into the bid, but in the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad bid for Rs 15.75 crore. As soon as Hyderabad bid, Punjab was asked about using RTM for Arshdeep. Punjab expressed interest in Arshdeep. After this, Hyderabad offered Rs 18 crore, for which Punjab agreed.

 

Arshdeep is known for his swing and wicket-taking abilities. Arshdeep has represented India in 59 T20 Internationals and has taken 92 wickets. He has become the most successful fast bowler for India in T20 Internationals and is the second-highest wicket-taker of all time despite only debuting in 2022. The youngster was a vital part of India's T20 World Cup-winning team this year and was the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 17 wickets in eight matches at an average of 12.47. Since 2019, Arshdeep has represented Punjab Kings in 65 matches, taking 76 wickets and best figures of 5/32. In 2024, he took 19 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 26.58.

 

Mitchell Starc (Australia)

 

Mitchell Starc entered the auction with a base price of Rs 2 crore. KKR once again started the bid for him, but Mumbai Indians also remained in the competition. At the same time, Delhi Capitals and RCB also showed interest in taking Starc. Finally, Delhi bought Starc for Rs 11.75 crore. It is known that the last time Starc was bid the biggest in IPL history, it was surpassed by Shreyas today.

 

Starc, a multiple-time world champion who has played in all formats for Australia, is considered one of the most dangerous fast bowlers of this era. He has taken 681 wickets in 281 matches. In 65 T20s for Australia, he has taken 79 wickets at an average of 23.81. In 142 T20s played around the world, he has taken 193 wickets at an average of 20.59 and best figures of 4/15.

 

After two seasons with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2014-15, Starc returned to the IPL in 2024 as the most expensive player ever. He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 24.75 crore. 'Big Match Player' Starc looked in form during the playoffs. He gave brilliant spells of 3/34 and 2/14 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier-1 and the final. He ended the season with 17 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 26.12. So far in his IPL career, Starc has taken 51 wickets in 41 matches.

 

Yuzvendra Chahal (India)

 

Indian team's leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal again entered the auction, whose base price was Rs 2 crore. Chahal is the most successful bowler in IPL history. Chennai started the bid on Chahal, but from the other end, Gujarat also showed interest in Chahal. Punjab also bid to get Chahal and clashed with Gujarat. Lucknow also jumped in between. A battle for Chahal was witnessed between Lucknow and Punjab. When Punjab bid Rs 14 crore for Chahal, RCB and Hyderabad also jumped in the auction. Then there was a competition between Hyderabad and Punjab to get Chahal. Punjab bid Rs 18 crore for Chahal and Hyderabad backed out. Chahal thus became the most expensive Indian spinner to be sold in the IPL auction.
