The festival of Janmashtami is being celebrated across India today, Friday, September 4, 2026. However, the festival does not mean that bank branches will be closed across the entire country. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, banks are closed in several specific banking centres for Janmashtami, while branches in other cities continue to operate normally.
Customers planning to visit their bank branch today should therefore check the holiday applicable to their particular city before heading out.
Where Are Banks Closed Today?
As per the RBI-based September 2026 holiday schedule, bank branches will remain closed on September 4 for Janmashtami (Vaishnava)/Krishna Jayanthi in several centres.
The centres listed for the September 4 holiday include:
Ahmedabad
Aizawl
Bhopal
Bhubaneswar
Chandigarh
Chennai
Dehradun
Gangtok
Hyderabad
Jaipur
Kanpur
Kolkata
Lucknow
Patna
Raipur
Ranchi
Shillong
Shimla
Some published RBI-based schedules also include additional regional centres for the Janmashtami observance, so customers should verify their exact location against the RBI holiday calendar or with their local branch.
Are Banks Open in Delhi and Mumbai?
Janmashtami is not a bank holiday in every banking centre. For example, Delhi and Mumbai are not listed among the September 4 Janmashtami closures in the RBI-based schedule, meaning branches there generally operate according to their normal Friday working hours.
The same principle applies to other centres where September 4 is not designated as a bank holiday.
Will SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank Be Closed?
The holiday applies to bank branches based on the applicable banking centre rather than being a blanket closure of a particular bank.
Therefore, branches of SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, PNB and other banks located in a centre where September 4 is an RBI-listed holiday will remain closed. Branches in centres without the holiday will generally function normally.
Will UPI and Online Banking Work Today?
A physical bank holiday does not mean that digital banking services stop.
Customers can continue using:
UPI payments
Mobile banking
Internet banking
ATMs
Digital fund transfers
Other supported online banking services
The RBI's RTGS system is also available 24x7 throughout the year, including bank holidays. However, services requiring a physical branch visit, such as certain documentation and paperwork, will have to wait until the branch reopens.
Bank Holiday September 2026: What Comes Next?
September has several regional bank holidays in addition to regular weekend closures. The RBI calendar lists further closures later in the month for events including elections, Ganesh Chaturthi, Karma Puja and other regional occasions.
Customers with urgent banking work should therefore check the applicable city-wise holiday schedule in advance.
