NGT seeks response
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has made the Noida Authority, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary (Environment), and Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate respondents in the case and directed them to file an affidavit at least one week before the next hearing scheduled for April 10, 2026.
This was the entire incident.
Late Friday night, in the Knowledge Park police station area, near the ATS Le Grandiose turn in Sector-150 of Noida, 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who was in a car, drowned in the water-filled basement of an under-construction mall. The accident occurred when the car went out of control near the turn. Dense fog and high speed are suspected to have contributed to the accident.
Before drowning, Yuvraj called his father and told him that he was drowning and asked him to come and save him. His panicked father rushed to the spot within 15 minutes. The police also reached the spot within 15 minutes, but they could not save his drowned son.
The fire brigade team, SDRF, and NDRF conducted a rescue operation for about four and a half hours and pulled Yuvraj out of the 30-foot-deep water and took him to the hospital. Doctors declared him dead.
The deceased's father, in his complaint filed at the police station, alleged that the accident occurred due to the lack of barricades and reflectors near the accident site. Rajkumar Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park Society in Sector-150, is a retired director from the State Bank of India (SBI). His wife had died a few years ago due to illness. The elder daughter is married and lives in the United Kingdom (UK). The son, Yuvraj Mehta, was a software engineer at Dunhamby India company in Sector-54, Gurugram.
On Friday night, he was returning home from work in his Grand Vitara car from Gurugram. Due to dense fog, about a kilometer before reaching home, near the T-junction at Sector-150 ATS Le Grandiose, his car broke through a drain wall and plunged into a waterlogged basement. Due to the large amount of water, the car overturned and began to float. Yuvraj somehow managed to get out of the car and climb on top of it. He called his father on his mobile phone to inform him of the incident.
His father immediately called 112 and rushed to the spot. Upon receiving the information from the control room, Inspector Sarvesh Singh arrived at the scene. Firefighters from the Knowledge Park fire station also arrived with small and large cranes. They attempted to rescue the engineer, but were unsuccessful.
Yuvraj kept flashing his mobile phone's flashlight and shouting for help. Due to the darkness and dense fog, the police and fire department faced difficulties. Fearing the depth of the water, the police and firefighters could not take the risk. As a result, at 1:45 AM, Yuvraj, along with the car, drowned in the water.
Meanwhile, the SDRF team arrived but lacked the necessary resources and could not locate him. The NDRF team from Ghaziabad arrived about an hour and a half later. After a two-and-a-half-hour rescue operation, they deployed a steamer and, using flashlights, pulled Yuvraj out of the water. He was immediately rushed to Kailash Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
