The Asian Para Games 2026 are underway in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with India aiming to build on its record medal haul from the previous edition. The fifth edition of the continental para-sporting event is being held from October 18 to 24, bringing together athletes from across Asia to compete in multiple disciplines.
India has fielded a 168-member athlete contingent comprising 112 men and 56 women across 11 sports. The squad features several established Paralympic champions, world champions and rising stars, including javelin thrower Sumit Antil, shooter Avani Lekhara, archer Sheetal Devi and badminton player Pramod Bhagat.
India has already opened its medal account, with Mona Agarwal winning gold and Avani Lekhara securing silver in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1 event. As the competition continues, attention will be on the country’s leading para-athletes and their efforts to add to India’s medal tally.
India’s Medal Journey at the Asian Para Games
India has steadily improved its performance at the Asian Para Games over the years. The country won 14 medals at the inaugural edition in Guangzhou, China, in 2010. The tally increased to 33 medals at Incheon, South Korea, in 2014, before rising to 72 at Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2018.
At the Hangzhou edition in 2023, India achieved its then-best performance, winning 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze. The result underlined the growing depth of India’s para-sporting talent.
With a strong mix of experienced international performers and emerging competitors, the Indian contingent will look to continue that progress in Japan. However, the smaller squad compared with the previous edition means that converting opportunities into medals will be particularly important.
