The speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's ODI future has received a strong response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has backed the veteran opener, pointing to his recent performances and questioning why there is continued speculation about his place in the Indian team.
Speaking to the media after the BCCI's review meeting on Thursday, Saikia said Rohit has been performing consistently well and highlighted his century in the recent ODI against England.
“Rohit Sharma has been playing consistently well. He scored a century in the last match; what more could you ask for? Why are there rumors? I will not fuel such speculation,” Saikia said.
Rohit Sharma Retirement Rumours: What Did BCCI Say?
Questions over Rohit's future reportedly intensified following India's ODI tour of England. There was speculation that the selectors were considering moving on from the former captain and that Rohit could retire from international cricket.
However, Rohit responded on the field with a strong performance, scoring a century against England at Lord's on July 19, 2026.
The BCCI secretary's latest comments indicate that the board is not looking to add further fuel to retirement speculation surrounding the experienced batter.
Rohit had already retired from Test cricket in May 2025 and announced his retirement from T20 international cricket after India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. He continues to be available for ODI cricket.
Rohit's ODI Future and the 2027 World Cup
The question of Rohit's role in India's ODI plans is particularly significant with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching.
Saikia said the BCCI's discussions are focused on preparing the Indian team for the next ODI World Cup. The board wants players to receive adequate rest, preparation time and practice matches before major tournaments and series.
Rohit's recent ODI form could therefore remain an important factor in determining India's plans for the tournament.
Ajit Agarkar's Absence From BCCI Review Meeting Explained
The BCCI review meeting was attended by several senior members of India's cricket setup, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was absent from the meeting.
Saikia explained that Agarkar was out of town and was in a location from where he could not participate, even online.
He also clarified that Agarkar's tenure was not discussed during the review meeting.
“There was no discussion regarding the selection committee. Our focus remained on the results of the England, Ireland and Sri Lanka series,” Saikia said.
BCCI Discusses Injuries, Player Workload and Future Tours
According to Saikia, the meeting did not focus on any single player. Instead, the board discussed the overall fitness and injury situation involving Indian cricketers.
The BCCI also discussed India's upcoming tours and preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Player workload, recovery time and preparation before major competitions were among the broader issues considered. Saikia also said the board intends to improve India's Future Tours Programme so players receive adequate opportunities to rest and prepare.
He further rejected suggestions of a communication gap in injury management within Indian cricket.
India Face Afghanistan in T20I Series
India's next assignment is a three-match T20 international series against Afghanistan.
Shreyas Iyer is set to captain the side, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has returned to the squad, although his participation is subject to fitness clearance.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana are also part of the squad.
India's Recent T20 Struggles
The BCCI review comes after a difficult run of results in India's recent T20 assignments.
India lost the two-match T20I series against Ireland 2-0 in June. The team subsequently suffered a 4-0 defeat in the five-match T20I series against England.
India also lost the ODI series against England 2-1 under Shubman Gill's captaincy.
These results have increased the focus on India's team combination, player workload, fitness management and preparations for future tournaments.
What Happens Next for Rohit Sharma?
For now, the BCCI's public position is clear: there is no reason to fuel speculation about Rohit Sharma's future based solely on retirement rumours.
His recent ODI century has strengthened the argument that the veteran batter remains capable of contributing at the highest level. With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, Rohit's performances and fitness will continue to attract significant attention.
The immediate focus, however, remains on India's upcoming fixtures and the broader rebuilding and preparation process ahead of the next major ODI tournament.
