Chennai, March 23 (IANS) DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday mourned the death of Singapore's first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, saying it was because of Lee that Tamil was one of the city state's official languages.

The former Tamil Nadu chief minister, in a statement here, said Lee earned the love and support of all three of Singapore's communities -- Tamils, Chinese and Malays.

He said it was only due to Lee that Tamil was one of the official languages in the city state.

Expressing grief at the death of Lee, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said it was a big loss for Tamils as he was very interested in the community's welfare.

Ramadoss quoted Lee as saying that a separate Tamil land was the only solution for Sri Lanka's ethnic problem.

Lee died on Monday at a Singapore hospital. He was 91.
