Yashasvi Jaiswal Hits Back After Asitha Fernando Clash: “Don’t Pass Judgment Without Knowing the Facts”

Posted on 24th Aug 2026 02:01 pm by rohit kumar

Yashasvi Jaiswal has broken his silence on his heated on-field exchange with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando, urging critics not to judge the incident without knowing what was said between the two players.

The incident took place during the opening day of the India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test in Colombo, after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45 runs and gave the Indian opener an animated send-off.

Jaiswal Responds After Fernando Altercation

Jaiswal responded to a video posted by commentator Harsha Bhogle on social media, which questioned whether the Indian batter had gone too far by confronting Fernando.

Jaiswal wrote in the comments that people should not pass judgment without knowing what Fernando had said to him. He added that if someone crosses the line, it is necessary to respond.

However, Jaiswal did not reveal what Fernando allegedly said, leaving the exact details of the exchange unclear.

What Happened Between Jaiswal and Fernando?

Jaiswal was batting on 45 runs when Fernando bowled him. After the dismissal, the Sri Lankan pacer appeared to give Jaiswal an aggressive send-off.

While walking back toward the pavilion, Jaiswal turned around and approached Fernando. A heated exchange followed, during which Jaiswal's helmet came into contact with Fernando's forehead.

Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva and other players quickly intervened and separated the two cricketers.

Jaiswal Had Hit Three Fours in Fernando's Over

The confrontation came after an intense battle between the two players.

Before his dismissal, Jaiswal had struck three boundaries in a single over from Fernando. The Sri Lankan pacer responded by getting the better of the Indian opener with a delivery that moved back in and bowled him.

The dismissal and subsequent send-off turned an already competitive contest into one of the talking points of the Test.

India Batting Coach Comments on the Incident

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak suggested that something may have been said during the exchange, potentially contributing to the escalation.

However, Kotak also acknowledged that Jaiswal should not have moved so close to Fernando during the confrontation.

Sri Lanka fast-bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk declined to speculate about possible disciplinary action, saying the matter should be left to the match referee.

Could the ICC Take Action Against Jaiswal?

Match referee Andy Pycroft is overseeing the incident.

The ICC Code of Conduct contains provisions concerning inappropriate physical contact involving players during international matches. If Jaiswal were found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.12, the possible sanctions could include an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the match fee and one or two demerit points.

Any disciplinary decision will depend on the match referee's assessment of the incident and the available evidence.

Jaiswal's Statement Adds Another Twist

Jaiswal's response has added a new dimension to the controversy because he strongly suggested that the exchange involved more than Fernando's send-off.

At the same time, the Indian batter has not disclosed the exact words allegedly used by Fernando. Until the full circumstances are established, the precise reason for Jaiswal's reaction remains unclear.

The incident is therefore likely to remain under scrutiny as the India-Sri Lanka Test continues.
