Sri Lanka Crisis: Wickremesinghe takes oath as acting President of Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is facing a major economic crisis, tendered his resignation on Thursday. After this, there is an atmosphere of celebration on the streets of Colombo. The protesters are seeing Gotabaya's resignation as their victory. Late Thursday night, many people came out on the streets of Colombo and celebrated. During this, firecrackers burst, and people were also seen swinging in fun. On the other hand, the protesters have also started withdrawing from the important government buildings that have been occupied.

 

Ranil Wickremesinghe to be Acting President

 

Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene said Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation has been accepted. The legal process is being followed. "Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will serve as the caretaker president until a new president is elected," he said. Parliamentarians have been called tomorrow to elect a new president.

 

Gotabaya on private tour: Singapore

 

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa reached Singapore on Thursday amid an economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka. Earlier, he had escaped from his country and reached the Maldives. On this issue, the Singapore government clarified the position saying that Rajapaksa is here on a private visit, and no asylum has been given to him. Singapore's foreign ministry said it had been confirmed that Rajapaksa had been allowed to enter Singapore on a private visit. He did not make any asylum demand nor has he been granted asylum, the statement said. Singapore generally does not grant asylum requests. Rajapaksa arrived on Saudi Airlines plane SV-788 at 7 pm on Thursday.

 

 

Voting will be held on Wednesday

 

Sri Lanka's MP Gavindu Kumaratunga said, "Voting will be held on Wednesday to elect a new president." A program has been fixed to elect a new President, he said. Nominations will be received soon.

 

Wickremesinghe was sworn in as caretaker president

 

After the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, PM Ranil Wickremesinghe took oath as the acting President of the country. He was administered the oath by the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka Jayanta Jayasuriya.
