BCCI Review Meeting Tomorrow: Gambhir, Agarkar and Laxman to Discuss Team India’s Performance and 2027 World Cup Plans

Posted on 3rd Sep 2026 11:15 am by rohit kumar

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called a review meeting following Team India’s disappointing performances on their recent overseas tours. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman, head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), are expected to attend the meeting at the board’s headquarters in Mumbai.

The meeting will focus on India’s recent results, player fitness and injuries, workload management and coordination between the team management, selection committee and Centre of Excellence. Preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup are also expected to be a major part of the discussions.

Why has the BCCI called the review meeting?

India’s recent results on overseas tours have raised concerns within the board. The team suffered a 0-2 defeat against Ireland in a two-match T20I series in June. It was India’s first T20I series loss in almost three years.

India subsequently endured a difficult tour of England. The team lost four of the five T20Is, while the ODI series ended with India suffering a 1-2 defeat after winning the opening match.

The results have prompted the BCCI to review the team's performance and assess what needs to change ahead of the next major assignments.

Player injuries and communication to be discussed

Player fitness is expected to be one of the key issues at the BCCI meeting. The board is likely to examine communication between the selection committee, team management and the Centre of Excellence regarding injured players.

Reports have suggested that the selection committee was not informed in time about Jasprit Bumrah's fitness status. The fitness and recovery of Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan are also expected to come under discussion.

The BCCI will also look at ways to improve coordination so that selectors have timely and accurate information before finalising squads.

Four players face fitness tests

Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana are expected to undergo fitness tests on September 9. Their availability for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan will depend on the results of those assessments.

With India's future schedule in mind, the BCCI is also expected to discuss how to manage the workload of fast bowlers and reduce the risk of recurring injuries.

IPL workload could come under scrutiny

The impact of the Indian Premier League (IPL) workload on players' fitness is another important issue expected to feature in the review.

The board is likely to examine whether the workload accumulated during the IPL and subsequent international cricket has contributed to injury concerns. A long-term workload-management strategy could become particularly important with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching.

Hardik Pandya's fitness a major concern

The fitness of all-rounder Hardik Pandya is also expected to receive considerable attention.

Hardik remains an important part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. However, concerns remain over his ability to bowl a full quota of overs consistently in ODIs.

The BCCI and team management are expected to discuss a long-term fitness and workload plan that can help Hardik remain available for India's major tournaments.

Focus shifts towards the 2027 ODI World Cup

While the immediate review will cover India's recent overseas performances, the broader objective is expected to be preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The selectors and team management will need to identify a stable core of players, improve injury management and build sufficient depth across departments.

The upcoming period could therefore prove important in determining India's ODI plans and the players who will form the core of the squad for the 2027 World Cup.

What to expect from the BCCI meeting?

The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the BCCI, coaching staff and selection committee to evaluate India's recent performances and identify areas that require improvement.

Key discussion points are likely to include:

Team India's recent overseas performances

Player injuries and fitness monitoring

Coordination between selectors, team management and the CoE

IPL workload and workload management

Fast-bowling resources and injury prevention

Hardik Pandya's long-term fitness

Fitness tests for key players

India's preparation and squad planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup

The outcome of the review could provide important indications about India's selection strategy, player workload management and plans for the next phase of the ODI cycle.
