The Indian team is currently in New York for the T20 World Cup to be held in America and West Indies. The tenure of the current team head Rahul Dravid is ending after this global tournament and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already invited applications for the post of head coach of Team India. Its last date was 27th May which has now passed. Despite the end of the deadline, there is suspense regarding the candidate for the post of head coach of the Indian team as no statement has come out from the board regarding this till now.
Gautam Gambhir also remained silent
According to media reports, former Indian team batsman Gautam Gambhir is leading in the race for the post of coach. Gambhir was the mentor of the winning team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024 season. However, he has also maintained silence regarding this matter. Both sides have not said anything about this but it seems that BCCI does not have a very strong option. It is understood that no big foreign name has applied for the post and Board Secretary Jay Shah has already said that they are looking for a candidate who is well-versed in the domestic structure of Indian cricket. BCCI had its eyes on National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman but the stylish former cricketer from Hyderabad does not seem to be interested in the full-time post.
The board can take time before making decisions
A board source was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, the time limit is fine but the board may take some more time before taking the decision. Currently, the team is busy preparing for the T20 World Cup. After this, senior players will be given rest on the tour of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and a senior coach from NCA can accompany the team. In such a situation, what is the hurry?
There was a discussion between Gambhir and Shah
While all the members of KKR were happy and celebrating after the title win against Sunrisers Hyderabad, team mentor Gautam Gambhir met BCCI Secretary Jai Shah after the match. Pictures of their meeting went viral on social media due to which speculations about Gambhir becoming the coach of the Indian team started again. However, KKR owner Shahrukh Khan has a very close relationship with Gambhir, so it will not be easy for him to leave the IPL team. Another aspect is that the opinion of senior Indian players currently present in New York on the possibility of Gambhir becoming the coach cannot be ignored.
