Coal India shares surged nearly 4% in early trade on Wednesday, September 2, emerging as the top gainer on the Nifty 50 even as Indian equities came under heavy selling pressure. The stock touched around ₹419.70 on the BSE, while its market capitalisation moved close to ₹2.6 lakh crore.
The sharp rise in Coal India shares came against a weak market backdrop, with the Nifty 50 and falling amid rising crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions following the latest US-Iran escalation.
Why Are Coal India Shares Rising Today?
Two major developments are supporting the Coal India share price rally.
1. Mahanadi Coalfields IPO Plan
Investor sentiment strengthened after Coal India filed draft papers for the proposed initial public offering of its wholly owned subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields.
Under the proposed IPO, Coal India plans to sell up to 66.18 crore equity shares, representing a 10% stake, through an Offer for Sale (OFS). Mahanadi Coalfields will not issue fresh shares and will not receive any proceeds from the offering.
The proposed listing is part of Coal India's broader strategy to unlock value from its subsidiaries. The company had earlier indicated that it could divest up to 25% in Mahanadi Coalfields and South Eastern Coalfields through IPOs or other routes.
Coal India has already moved ahead with the listing of other subsidiaries, including Bharat Coking Coal and Central Mine Planning & Design Institute.
2. Strong Coal Demand and Higher E-Auction Premiums
Coal India's operational numbers have also supported the stock.
The company's total coal supplies increased 5.5% year-on-year to 60.6 million tonnes in August, while supplies during April-August FY27 rose 6.7% to 322.9 million tonnes. Supplies to the power sector increased 4.5% during August.
At the same time, Coal India's August e-auction data showed an average premium of 59% over the notified price, compared with a 46% average premium during the first five months of FY27. The stronger premiums indicate firm demand and could support the company's realisations.
Brokerages have also pointed to declining pithead inventories and strong thermal coal demand as factors that could support e-auction pricing going forward.
UBS Maintains Buy Rating on Coal India
Brokerage firm UBS has maintained its Buy rating on Coal India with a target price of ₹550 per share.
UBS highlighted strong coal offtake, robust thermal coal demand and falling inventories as positive factors. The brokerage expects the tighter inventory situation to potentially support higher e-auction premiums.
HSBC, meanwhile, has retained a Hold rating with a target price of ₹440, reflecting a more cautious view despite the favourable demand and inventory backdrop.
Coal India Share Price Outlook
Coal India's outperformance stands out because it comes at a time when the broader Indian stock market is under pressure from higher crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
The combination of the Mahanadi Coalfields IPO, higher coal supplies, strong thermal coal demand, lower inventories and firm e-auction premiums has provided multiple positive triggers for the PSU stock.
However, investors should track crude prices, production trends, coal demand and the progress of the Mahanadi Coalfields IPO before drawing conclusions about the stock's future performance.
