Cristiano Ronaldo has clarified that he has no immediate plans to retire from international football after leaving Portugal’s training camp amid a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus. The Portugal captain has apologised to his teammates and supporters for his departure, accepted that he could face disciplinary action and confirmed that he remains available for national-team duty after serving any suspension.
The controversy followed Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway, in which Ronaldo remained an unused substitute despite warming up. In a lengthy public statement, the forward accused Jesus of breaking promises over his playing time and the way the situation would subsequently be explained. Jesus, however, denied that he had made the agreement Ronaldo described.
Why did Cristiano Ronaldo leave Portugal’s training camp?
According to Ronaldo, he had agreed with Jesus to miss Portugal’s matches against Norway and Denmark as part of a plan to manage his fitness. However, he said the coach later told him that he would play for around 30 minutes against Norway.
Ronaldo claimed that he began warming up from half-time but was never brought onto the pitch. He viewed the decision as a breach of the understanding he believed they had reached.
The disagreement reportedly escalated after the Norway match, when Ronaldo expected Jesus to clarify the situation publicly. Ronaldo said a subsequent discussion involving the coach and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho resulted in an agreement about what would be explained at a press conference.
According to Ronaldo, the agreed points were intended to make clear that he had not demanded playing time and had respected the coach’s authority. He also wanted the coach to acknowledge that asking him to warm up without eventually using him had been a mistake.
Ronaldo alleged that Jesus’s public comments did not reflect their private understanding. He said this was the second time he felt the coach had failed to keep his word, prompting him to leave the training camp ahead of Portugal’s match against Denmark.
What did Ronaldo say about Jorge Jesus?
In his statement, Ronaldo stressed that trust and honesty were essential to professional relationships. He said he had never attempted to interfere with a coach’s technical or tactical decisions during his long career.
Ronaldo also said he had communicated directly with Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. According to the forward, he was prepared to accept an honest conversation if the team no longer wanted him, rather than remain in a situation where he felt his presence was not appropriate.
However, Ronaldo’s account is not undisputed. Jesus has denied that the agreement described by the forward existed, while maintaining that team selection and tactical decisions fall under the coach’s authority.
The dispute therefore centres on differing accounts of their private discussions, the management of Ronaldo’s playing time and how the decision was communicated publicly.
Cristiano Ronaldo apologises and accepts possible punishment
Despite criticising the handling of the situation, Ronaldo acknowledged that leaving the camp was a mistake. He apologised to Portugal’s supporters for not greeting them after the Norway match and to his teammates for his departure.
He also accepted that being captain carries additional responsibility. Rather than asking for special treatment, Ronaldo said the Portuguese Football Federation should assess his actions and impose any appropriate punishment.
Whether disciplinary action will be taken, and what form it could take, depends on the federation’s assessment and applicable rules. Ronaldo has made clear that he is prepared to face the consequences.
Will Cristiano Ronaldo retire from Portugal football?
Ronaldo’s statement indicates that he is not retiring from international football at this stage. He said he would remain available for Portugal if he is physically fit, performing for his club and scoring goals, even after serving any suspension that might be imposed.
His comments leave open the possibility of returning to the national team rather than limiting his future involvement to a farewell appearance.
For Portugal supporters, the key question is now whether the disagreement can be resolved and when Ronaldo might next be available for selection. His statement makes his intention clear, but his return will also depend on the federation’s decisions, the coach’s selection and any disciplinary outcome.
Has Jorge Jesus ruled out Ronaldo’s return?
Jesus has left the door open to Ronaldo’s return while defending the coach’s authority over team decisions. Portuguese football officials have also indicated that the situation should be handled internally rather than treated as an irreversible break.
That leaves room for a possible reconciliation, although no return date should be assumed until an official squad announcement or statement confirms it.
