Former Indian team off-spinner R Ashwin announced his retirement from IPL on 27 August. 38-year-old Ashwin, while giving information about his sudden retirement on X, said that he is now ready to travel and play in T20 leagues around the world.
His sudden decision to retire has surprised everyone. He had also retired from T20 International cricket last year. Now, after saying goodbye to IPL, the discussion has intensified about whether everything was not right between CSK and Ashwin.
Why did R Ashwin suddenly retire from IPL?
In fact, R Ashwin made his IPL debut with the CSK team. In the year 2009, he played his first IPL match for CSK. At the same time, his IPL journey also ended with CSK.
In his IPL career, Ashwin played for teams like CSK, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, but through some reports, it was being speculated that CSK would drop Ashwin before IPL 2026, and there was talk of trading Sanju Samson to the Rajasthan Royals.
Was there a fight between R Ashwin and CSK?
Actually, R Ashwin (R Ashwin IPL Retires) is always in the news due to his outspoken statements. He recently claimed on his YouTube channel that CSK was ready to pay 'extra money' to avail the services of young batter Dewald Brevis, after which the controversy broke out.
He said that other franchise teams had also shown interest in buying Brevis (Dewald Brevis IPL), but CSK talked to the agents and offered them a higher fee, after which the deal was confirmed. After his statement, the five-time IPL champion team had to give clarification.
CSK had said in a statement that after Gurjpanit Singh got injured, Dewald Brevis was included in the team as a replacement as per the rules. Gurjpanit was bought in the auction for Rs 2.20 crore, and Brevis was also given the same amount.
After this, Ashwin's reaction also came to the fore. He said,
"My intention in the old video was to talk about Brevis' batting, not about the amount related to his IPL contract. We have to understand that every player playing in the IPL has a contract with the franchise and this league. My words were distorted. Actually, I had only talked about Brevis's brilliant batting. Nowadays, news is made from a statement or headline. The clarification given by CSK was necessary because many people had doubts. The truth is that no one has made any mistake."
Name was also in trade rumours before IPL 2026
R Ashwin (R Ashwin News) was bought by CSK for Rs 9.75 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, which was an emotional 'homecoming' moment for him, as he started his IPL career through the CSK team, but the 2025 season was disappointing for him, where he took only 7 wickets in 9 matches.
This was the first time he played fewer than 12 matches in a season. After this, some reports claimed that he had talked to CSK about his future. There was also a report, according to which Ashwin will be traded for IPL 2026. However, no clear information has come out yet as to why Ashwin said goodbye to IPL.
