
Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Taiwan on Wednesday morning. This earthquake was so strong that many buildings in the southern city collapsed. The Taiwan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. Pictures of damaged cars and broken roofs have emerged in many places due to the earthquake. According to the information received, four people have died so far due to the strong tremors of the earthquake and more than 50 are said to be injured.
Taiwan's earthquake monitoring agency put the intensity at 7.2, while the US Geological Survey put it at 7.4. Wu Chien-fu, head of Taiwan's earthquake monitoring bureau, said its impact was felt as far away as the Taiwan-controlled island of Kinmen, off the coast of China.
Many buildings bowed due to the strong tremors of the earthquake
The earthquake was so strong that a five-storey building in sparsely populated Hualien was badly damaged with its first floor completely collapsing and the rest leaning at an angle of 45 degrees. Tiles from many old buildings and some new office complexes also fell in the capital, Taipei.
Tsunami warning given after earthquake
The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami wave of 30 cm (about 1 foot) was detected off the coast of Yonaguni Island about 15 minutes after the earthquake struck. JAMA said waves could also hit the coasts of Miyako and Yaeyama islands. The Japan Self-Defense Force has dispatched aircraft to gather information about the impact of the tsunami around the Okinawa area.
