Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa is preparing for one of the biggest investments in India’s banking sector as his company, Fairfax Financial Holdings, has been selected to acquire a 60.72% controlling stake in IDBI Bank for ₹52,878 crore. The proposed transaction marks a major development in India’s financial services industry and could pave the way for an integrated business spanning banking, insurance, investment banking and wealth management.
Often called the “Warren Buffett of Canada” because of his long-term, value-oriented investment approach, Watsa has built an international financial services business with significant exposure to India. The IDBI Bank transaction represents a major expansion of that presence.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved Fairfax’s selection as the strategic buyer on October 14, 2026. However, the acquisition is not yet complete and remains subject to regulatory approvals and the completion of the transaction process.
Who Is Prem Watsa?
Prem Watsa is the chairman and chief executive officer of Fairfax Financial Holdings, a Toronto-based financial services and investment company. Born near Hyderabad, India, in 1950, Watsa moved to Canada in 1972 to pursue further education and build his career.
He studied chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras before earning an MBA from the University of Western Ontario, now known as the Richard Ivey School of Business.
Watsa established Fairfax Financial Holdings in 1985. Under his leadership, the company developed into an international insurance and investment group with interests across multiple industries and markets.
His investment philosophy emphasises long-term ownership, careful valuation and a willingness to invest when market conditions create opportunities. This approach has earned him the nickname “Canada’s Warren Buffett,” although the two investors have built their businesses in different markets and structures.
Watsa’s latest proposed investment in IDBI Bank reflects his continued interest in India’s long-term economic and financial services growth.
Why Is Prem Watsa Called Canada’s ‘Warren Buffett’?
The nickname comes primarily from Watsa’s investment philosophy. Like Warren Buffett, he is associated with value investing, long-term business ownership and a focus on financial discipline rather than short-term market movements.
Through Fairfax Financial Holdings, Watsa has invested in insurance businesses, financial services and other companies across several countries. His strategy has often involved taking positions when he believes an asset is undervalued or has long-term growth potential.
India has become an important market within Fairfax’s investment strategy. The group already has exposure to Indian businesses, including CSB Bank, airport infrastructure, insurance and capital markets.
The proposed IDBI Bank acquisition would significantly expand this presence by giving Fairfax a controlling interest in a large Indian banking institution, subject to completion of the transaction and the necessary approvals.
IDBI Bank Deal: What Are the Details?
Under the proposed transaction, Fairfax’s wholly owned subsidiary, 10955230 Canada Inc., the parent entity of which is Fairfax Financial Holdings, has been selected to acquire a combined 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank.
The stake will be sold by two existing shareholders: the Government of India and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
Key details of the transaction are as follows:
Total deal value: ₹52,878.08 crore
Stake being sold: 60.72%
Government of India stake being sold: 30.48%
LIC stake being sold: 30.24%
Bid price: ₹81 per share
Government-assessed fair value: ₹75.99 per share
After the transaction, the Government of India is expected to retain a 15% stake in IDBI Bank, while LIC will hold 19%. Together, they will continue to own 34% of the bank.
The transaction forms part of the government’s strategic disinvestment programme. It would also represent a significant shift in the ownership of a bank that previously required substantial capital support from the government and LIC.
How Did IDBI Bank Become an Acquisition Target?
IDBI Bank faced considerable financial difficulties during the previous decade, including elevated non-performing assets and losses. In May 2017, the Reserve Bank of India placed the lender under its Prompt Corrective Action framework because of concerns about its financial health.
LIC subsequently became a major shareholder, and the bank underwent a period of restructuring and recovery. The RBI lifted the restrictions in March 2021, subject to conditions and continued monitoring.
Since then, IDBI Bank has worked to improve its financial position and asset quality. The proposed sale reflects the government’s decision to bring in a strategic investor rather than continue as a majority shareholder.
The bank’s extensive branch network and existing customer base could also provide Fairfax with a platform to expand its financial services operations in India.
Prem Watsa’s India Investments: CSB Bank, Insurance and More
Fairfax already has a substantial presence in India through several investments.
CSB Bank: Fairfax has an approximately 40% stake in Kerala-based CSB Bank. The investment gives Watsa’s group existing exposure to India’s banking sector, but it also creates a regulatory consideration as Fairfax moves towards gaining control of IDBI Bank.
Go Digit Insurance: Fairfax has exposure to the Digit insurance business, which operates in India’s insurance market. The group plans to contribute its interests in Digit to IDBI Bank as part of a proposed broader financial services structure, subject to the necessary approvals.
IIFL Capital Services: Fairfax India also holds a significant stake in IIFL Capital Services. Fairfax has proposed bringing this interest into the IDBI Bank structure, potentially expanding the bank’s exposure to capital markets and wealth management.
Airport and infrastructure investments: Fairfax has also invested in Indian businesses beyond banking, including airport infrastructure, further broadening its exposure to the country’s economic growth.
In recognition of his contributions to trade and industry, Watsa was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020, one of India’s civilian honours.
Fairfax’s Big Plan: Build an Integrated Financial Services Group
The IDBI Bank deal is not simply about acquiring a controlling interest in a bank. Fairfax has outlined a broader plan to create an integrated financial services business in India.
The group intends to combine IDBI Bank with its interests in Digit insurance and IIFL Capital Services, subject to the completion of the bank acquisition and separate regulatory approvals.
The proposed structure could bring several services together:
Banking: Deposits, loans and other conventional banking products through IDBI Bank.
Insurance: Life and general insurance products through Digit-related businesses.
Capital markets: Investment banking and related financial services through IIFL Capital Services.
Wealth management: A wider range of investment and financial products for customers.
An integrated model could allow the businesses to offer customers a broader range of financial products through a connected platform. It could also create opportunities for cross-selling and operational efficiencies.
However, these benefits are not guaranteed. The plan depends on regulatory clearances, the structure of the proposed transfers and Fairfax’s ability to integrate the businesses effectively.
Why Is the IDBI Bank Deal Different From Other Foreign Investments?
Foreign investors have increasingly shown interest in India’s financial services sector, attracted by credit demand, financial inclusion and the expansion of insurance and investment products.
Several recent transactions have involved international investors acquiring substantial minority stakes in Indian financial companies. Fairfax’s proposed acquisition of IDBI Bank is different because it involves a controlling stake in a large banking institution.
If completed, the transaction would give Fairfax a direct role in the bank’s ownership and strategic direction, while the government and LIC would remain shareholders.
The proposed combination with insurance and capital markets businesses would also distinguish the strategy from a conventional bank investment. Fairfax is seeking to build a broader financial services presence rather than rely solely on the performance of one lending business.
What Are the Risks and Regulatory Challenges?
Despite the scale of the proposed deal, several challenges remain.
RBI approval: IDBI Bank is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. Fairfax will need the necessary regulatory clearances before the change in control can be completed.
Insurance and securities approvals: The proposed transfer of Digit-related insurance interests and IIFL Capital Services into the wider structure will require separate regulatory consideration, including approvals relevant to insurance and securities businesses.
CSB Bank ownership: Fairfax’s existing approximately 40% stake in CSB Bank creates an additional regulatory issue. Prem Watsa has said the group will focus on completing the IDBI transaction first and then consider the options for CSB Bank within the applicable regulatory framework. A merger should not be treated as confirmed.
Integration risks: Combining banking, insurance and capital markets businesses involves different regulatory requirements, technology systems, operating models and risk controls. Effective integration will be important if the group is to achieve the benefits it expects.
Banking performance: The long-term outcome will also depend on IDBI Bank’s ability to maintain asset quality, grow lending responsibly and compete with other Indian banks.
