IPL 2024: Sunrisers removed Markram, who won SA20, from captaincy, and handed over the responsibility to Cummins worth Rs 20.5 crore.

Changes continue in IPL 2024. After Mumbai Indians suddenly removed Rohit Sharma from the captaincy and handed it over to Hardik Pandya, now another team has also made a big change in the captaincy. 2016 champion team Sunrisers Hyderabad has handed over the command of the team to Australia's world-winning captain Pat Cummins and removed Aiden Markram from the captaincy, who took command last season. It was under the captaincy of Markram that Sunrisers won the South Africa T20 League for two consecutive years.

The sunrisers' performance last season was poor

Under the captaincy of Markram, Sunrisers' performance in the last season of IPL was very poor. The team had won only four out of 14 matches. The team stood in 10th place. After this, in the mini auction in December 2023, Sunrisers bought Pat Cummins for a record price of Rs 20.50 crore. He became the second most expensive player in IPL history. His compatriot Mitchell Starc was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in this auction for Rs 24.75 crore.

Cummins is not captain of Australia in the T20

Australia won the ODI World Cup last year under the captaincy of Cummins. Apart from this, he also won the title of World Test Championship. However, the surprising thing is that Cummins is not the captain of Australia's T20 team. The Australian team will likely play the T20 World Cup this year under the leadership of new captain Mitchell Marsh. Cummins is playing under the captaincy of Marsh in the ongoing T20 series against New Zealand. In such a situation, it is surprising for Sunrisers to make him the captain in this format.

Markram is the captain of Sunrisers in SA20

Not only this, Sunrisers have handed over the command of their team Eastern Cape in the South African T20 League to Markram. Sunrisers Eastern Cape had performed brilliantly and won titles in the last two seasons. In the final of this season, they defeated Durban Super Giants by 89 runs. Even in the league stage, the team won seven out of 10 matches and topped the points table with 33 points. It will be interesting to see how Markram performs after being relieved of the responsibility of captaincy in the IPL.

Cummins did not play last season

Cummins had withdrawn from IPL 2023 to focus on international cricket. Before that, he was a part of the Kolkata team from 2020 to 2022. Cummins is the third captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last three seasons. In 2022, under the captaincy of Kane Williamson, the team finished eighth. He was released before the 2023 season. Last season, Markram took the command and now Cummins will be seen doing it. In the 2023 IPL, Markram was also a flop with the bat and was able to score 248 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 129.

Daniel Vettori is the new head coach of the team

Apart from this, Sunrisers Hyderabad has made another big change. The franchise has also changed the head coach. Former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori has been appointed as the new head coach and Brian Lara has been removed. In 2023, Lara became the coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad team in place of Tom Moody. Apart from this, it has also been revealed in media reports that bowling coach Dale Steyn has asked for a break, and in such a situation, former Kiwi all-rounder James Franklin can be appointed as the bowling coach. Sunrisers will start their IPL 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. This match will be played on 23 March. After this, the team will play a match against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on March 27.
