Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have found themselves embroiled in controversy amidst the 2026 IPL season. The franchise faces serious allegations of misusing the concussion substitute rule.
On Thursday, during the match against Chennai Super Kings, Mitchell Santner sustained an injury while attempting to take a catch off a delivery bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. He suffered an injury to his shoulder. The Mumbai all-rounder had to be escorted off the field. MI subsequently submitted a formal request to replace Mitchell Santner with Shardul Thakur, a request that was approved.
Mumbai Team Under Scrutiny
A major controversy erupted regarding the substitution, as questions arose not only regarding Mumbai’s alleged misuse of the concussion substitute rule but also concerning whether Shardul Thakur could be considered a like-for-like replacement for Santner.
According to the IPL’s Playing Conditions, a concussion substitute is permitted only when a player sustains an injury to the head or neck. The severity of the injury is assessed based on the nature of the treatment required, following which the Match Referee grants approval. In Santner’s case, the injury appeared to be to his shoulder, whereas the request for a substitute was submitted on the grounds of neurological symptoms.
What Do ICC Rules State?
Later, visuals from the Mumbai Indians dressing room showed Mitchell Santner applying ice to his shoulder. According to ICC regulations, a concussion substitute may be utilized under the following circumstances:
Immediately, in the event of a confirmed concussion or a suspected concussion.
Following an assessment conducted either on or off the field of play.
At any other juncture where a concussion has occurred or is suspected, including instances where the player had previously received treatment and returned to the field.
What Jayawardene Said
Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene addressed the issue during a press conference, offering a clarification on the matter. He stated that Santner had sustained injuries to both his neck and shoulder while attempting to take the catch. He further revealed that when the management requested a concussion substitute, the match referee granted permission for Shardul to take his place.
However, Shardul replacing Santner proved to be of no avail, as the Mumbai Indians suffered their biggest defeat—in terms of runs—at the hands of CSK in their IPL history. Mumbai endured a 103-run defeat against CSK.
