Major Relief for Migrant Workers: No Shortage of 5-kg Cylinders; Government Doubles the Quota.

Posted on 7th Apr 2026 04:37 pm by rohit kumar

Amidst the disruptions in LPG cylinder supplies in India caused by the war in the Middle East, the Central Government has taken a significant step. The Central Government has decided to double the quantity of 5-kilogram LPG cylinders allocated to states and Union Territories.

Essentially, this measure has been taken by the Central Government to shield migrant workers and the vulnerable sections of society from fuel shortages and to prevent them from falling prey to black-marketing. A key highlight of this initiative is that these 5-kilogram cylinders can be easily purchased simply by presenting an identity card.

Government’s Major Move to Combat Black-Marketing

These cylinders will be specifically reserved for workers who do not possess proof of a permanent address. This is crucial because, for a regular domestic gas connection, consumers are required to provide proof of address—a requirement that often proves difficult for migrants, forcing them to purchase cooking gas from black-market dealers at exorbitant prices.

The allocation of these additional cylinders to the states will be determined based on the average daily supply of cylinders provided to migrant workers during the period of March 2–3 of this year. This additional allocation will be over and above the existing limit of 20 percent, which was established on March 21.

What is Required to Obtain a 5-kg Cylinder?

The Central Government has now authorized the purchase of 5-kilogram ‘Free Trade LPG’ cylinders without the requirement of submitting proof of address. To obtain one, individuals simply need to visit their nearest LPG distributor, where they can purchase the cylinder by presenting a valid ID card. It is important to note that the 5-kilogram ‘Chhotu’ cylinder is intended strictly for domestic use; its commercial use is strictly prohibited.

Crackdown on Black-Marketing Intensifies; Over 50,000 Cylinders Seized So Far

According to PTI, officials have reported that the crackdown against the hoarding and black-marketing of LPG cylinders has been intensified. To date, more than 50,000 cylinders have been seized. More than 1,400 show-cause notices have been issued to LPG distributors, and the dealerships of 36 of them have been suspended. Additionally, he has appealed to the public to conserve energy and remain wary of rumors. Adequate stocks of fuel are available, and refineries are operating at full capacity.
