Several teams were formed to catch Mihir, who was missing for three days after the accident. The police tracked Mihir to an apartment in Virar, about 65 km from Mumbai. Mihir is the son of politician Rajesh Shah, a member of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction. A dozen people, including Shah's parents and two sisters, are in custody.

The police caught Mihir when one of his friends turned on his phone for 15 minutes. On July 6, Mihir Shah was reportedly driving his BMW after partying for hours with friends at a Juhu bar.
