SCO: PM Modi may distance himself from the SCO meeting to be held in Pakistan; India, angry with terrorism, may take this step

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may distance himself from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting to be held on 15-16 October in Islamabad, Pakistan. India, upset with the increasing terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, may also refrain from sending its representative.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in an official statement, termed the media reports of PM Modi's visit to Pakistan as speculation. The ministry said such reports are being circulated that PM Modi may attend the SCO meeting. No official decision has been taken in this matter nor has the ministry made any comment. Host Pakistan has sent an invitation to PM Modi for the SCO meeting. Bilateral talks between the two countries have stopped after the terrorist attack on the Pathankot airbase in 2016. After this incident, India has repeatedly said that it will not hold any talks with Pakistan as long as terrorism continues.

It is worth noting that Pakistan has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come to Pakistan to attend the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) meeting. This meeting is to be held in Islamabad in October this year and the heads of state of the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will attend this meeting.

SCO meeting will be held in October

Pakistan will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting on 15-16 October. The hosting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is given to its member countries in turn. Under this, this time Pakistan has got the responsibility of hosting the meeting. PM Modi has been attending the meeting of the heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, but Prime Minister Modi did not attend the meeting held in Kazakhstan this year because this meeting was held at the time of the general elections. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar attended that meeting in place of PM Modi. It is not yet clear whether the leaders will get the facility to address virtually in the meeting to be held in Pakistan or not.

India and Pakistan are full members of SCO

India and Pakistan are full members of SCO along with China, and Russia. China dominates the SCO. China used this platform to promote BRI. However, India has never supported this project of China and even last year, India did not allow the mention of BRI in the joint statement of SCO. SCO is the only multilateral organization in which India and Pakistan work together.
