Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this week. He was last seen playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. Ashwin revealed that he is ready to play in foreign leagues. He can now be a part of the Big Bash League (BBL), South Africa 20, or other franchise tournaments.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed that while he considered the possibility of playing another season, he decided not to do so. He was not ready to play hard cricket for three months. He also praised former CSK captain MS Dhoni, who can play IPL next season despite turning 44 last month.
Ashwin said, "I was wondering if I could play IPL next year. Three months of IPL is a bit too much for me. It is tiring. This is one reason why I am stunned to see a player like MS Dhoni. As you grow older, your ability to play IPL decreases. Playing cricket for three months is not easy. You have to travel, play matches, and rest your body after the matches."
Ashwin made his IPL debut in 2009. He was part of CSK in his first and last seasons. Ashwin played IPL for 16 years, during which he was part of Chennai Super Kings for 8 seasons. He took 187 wickets in 220 IPL matches at an average of 30.22. His best performance was 4/34.
Ashwin also contributed a little with the bat. The veteran spinner scored 833 runs at an average of 13.02. During this period, he scored a half-century. Apart from Chennai, he was a part of Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
