Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) shares rallied nearly 5% on Friday, October 9, after India's largest IT services company announced its second-quarter results for the financial year 2026–27. The company's profit and revenue increased year-on-year, while its artificial intelligence (AI) business continued to grow.
However, brokerages remain divided on the stock's outlook. Nomura sees potential upside of nearly 27%, while Citigroup expects further downside of around 11.4%, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the IT sector's growth prospects.
TCS Q2 Results: Net Profit Rises 14.9% to ₹13,884 Crore
TCS reported consolidated net profit of ₹13,884 crore for the July–September quarter, up 14.9% from ₹12,075 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue increased 11.2% year-on-year to ₹73,188 crore from ₹65,799 crore.
The results reflected steady profitability and growth across several international markets and business segments. The company reported operating margins of 24% and total contract value (TCV) of $9.6 billion during the quarter.
TCS also reported annualised AI revenue of $3.1 billion, accounting for more than 10% of its revenue. Major business developments included a strategic partnership with Porsche and an agreement to transition Best Buy's Global Capability Centre in India to TCS.
The company announced a second interim dividend of ₹12 per share for FY27, with October 14, 2026, set as the record date.
TCS Share Price Today: Stock Rallies After Earnings
TCS shares gained sharply in Friday's trading session as investors reacted to the quarterly results and the company's stable operating margins. The stock rose by around 5% intraday, while the Nifty IT index also advanced as IT stocks rebounded.
The rally came amid concerns over the US government's suspension of several technology companies from the Permanent Labor Certification Program, or PERM. TCS said the development was not expected to have a material impact on its workforce strategy or client engagements.
The latest gains followed a difficult period for the stock, making the earnings announcement an important event for investors assessing the company's near-term prospects.
Nomura Sees 27% Upside in TCS Shares
Brokerage firm Nomura maintained its Buy rating on TCS and set a target price of ₹2,630. Based on the previous closing price of approximately ₹2,076, the target implies potential upside of nearly 27%.
Nomura's positive outlook reflects the company's deal pipeline and growth visibility, although macroeconomic uncertainty and investment requirements remain risks to future growth and margins.
The target price is an analyst estimate, not a guaranteed future share price. Actual returns will depend on the company's performance, market conditions and investor sentiment.
Citi Warns of 11.4% Downside
In contrast, Citigroup maintained a Sell rating on TCS with a target price of ₹1,840, implying potential downside of around 11.4% from the previous close.
Citi's cautious stance reflects concerns over sluggish revenue growth, pressure on operating margins and uncertainty over the pace of recovery in demand for traditional IT services.
Other brokerages have also highlighted challenges around margins and growth visibility, even as TCS continues to expand its AI-related business.
The contrasting price targets underline the difference between the bullish view that deal wins and AI demand could support a recovery and the bearish view that weak client spending and reinvestment costs could weigh on earnings.
Should Investors Track TCS Shares After Q2 Results?
TCS's latest results offer a mixed picture: profit increased, revenue grew and annualised AI revenue crossed $3 billion, but questions remain about the pace of demand recovery and future margins.
Investors comparing brokerage forecasts should examine the assumptions behind each target, including revenue growth, operating margins, deal conversion and AI-related opportunities. A sharp one-day rally does not by itself establish the stock's longer-term direction.
Nomura's ₹2,630 target and Citi's ₹1,840 target represent opposing analyst views. Neither should be treated as a certain outcome, and investors should consider their risk tolerance and investment horizon before making decisions.
