Pre-election political violence continues in Bangladesh following the murder of youth leader Usman Hadi. Azizur Rahman Musabbir, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)'s volunteer wing, Swachchhasebak Dal, was murdered on Tuesday night. Police and party sources said that unidentified assailants shot and killed Musabbir in the capital city of Dhaka.

The escalating violence ahead of the national elections scheduled for February 12 in Bangladesh is raising questions about the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. It is worth noting that Usman Hadi's family members had also accused Yunus of orchestrating his murder to postpone the elections.

A wave of political violence in Bangladesh

According to a report by The Daily Star, Musabbir, the general secretary of the BNP's volunteer wing, Swachchhasebak Dal, was shot by unidentified assailants near the Super Star Hotel in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar area at around 8:30 pm. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon Zone) Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Karim said that he was taken to BRB Hospital in Panthapath, but was declared dead upon arrival.

Another person, Sufian Masud, the general secretary of the Tejgaon Thana Workers' Union, was injured in the attack. Party members said that Musabbir had attended a program with a group of residents from Shariatpur at the Super Star Hotel earlier that evening.

Suspects at large, police still searching.

Musabbir and Masud were walking down a nearby street when two men opened fire on them. Police said the attackers fled the scene on foot. Following the incident, a group of people, including local BNP activists, staged a protest near Sonargaon intersection. Family members and party workers said that Musabbir had spent most of his time in jail during the Awami League regime and was repeatedly arrested in several political cases.
