So far it has been confirmed in samples from Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Puducherry, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha. The states of Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra have the highest number of XBB1.16 cases. However, due to the low testing and limited genome sequencing, scientists cannot give a high degree of probability according to the individual states of the country.
First met in Karnataka and Maharashtra
A senior scientist at INSACOG, who has been monitoring genome sequencing for a long time, said that the initial genomes of this new sub-variant were first found in Karnataka and Maharashtra in February. Genomic monitoring of the coronavirus is still necessary, he said. As people are getting infected and new strains of the virus are emerging, it is very important for people to pay attention to the Covid precautions.
