The BCCI has imposed a fine of ₹12 lakh on Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill. He received this penalty for maintaining a slow over rate during the 14th match of IPL 2026 against the Delhi Capitals.
The Gujarat team secured a victory against Delhi by a mere one run on the very last ball of the match. This marked their first win of the current season; however, in the wake of this victory, Gill has been slapped with a hefty fine running into lakhs.
Shubman Gill Fine: ₹12 Lakh Penalty Imposed on Gill
According to an IPL media advisory, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has been fined due to his team’s failure to maintain the required over rate. As this constituted the team’s first offense of the season, a fine of ₹12 lakh has been imposed on him under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Speaking of the match itself, GT clinched a thrilling victory, defeating Delhi by one run. While chasing a target of 211 runs, the Delhi team could only manage to score 209 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Delhi suffered this defeat largely due to David Miller’s decision not to take a single on the fifth ball of the final over. David Miller—who, for a time, appeared to be emerging as the team’s hero—turned into the villain in the blink of an eye.
What is the IPL Slow Over Rate Rule?
In the IPL, every team is required to complete its quota of 20 overs within a stipulated time frame. If a team fails to do so, it is deemed to have maintained a slow over rate, and the captain is penalized.
It is worth noting that an innings is typically expected to be completed within approximately 90 minutes. Excluding strategic time-outs and other scheduled breaks, the pace of the overs is monitored, and the Match Referee ensures that the team does not fall behind the allotted time schedule. Furthermore, if a team is found guilty of a slow over rate for the first time, a fine of ₹12 lakh is imposed on the captain.
If the team commits this offense a second time, the captain faces a fine of ₹24 lakh, while the remaining players are penalized with a deduction of a certain percentage of their match fees. Upon a third offense, the captain could face a hefty fine as well as a one-match ban.
