India's rising badminton star Tanvi Patri has scripted history at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. The 15-year-old shuttler has become the first Indian woman to reach the women's singles badminton final at the competition, securing the country its first-ever medal in the discipline.
Tanvi booked her place in the gold-medal match after defeating Japan's second seed, Yuzuno Watanabe, in a thrilling three-game semifinal. The Indian won 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 in a contest that tested her skill and composure.
She will now face China's Yi Xin Zhang in the final. Zhang recently won gold at the World Junior Championships, setting up a challenging title clash for the young Indian.

Tanvi began the semifinal confidently, taking control of the opening game and winning it 21-14. Watanabe responded strongly in the second game, raising her level and taking it 21-11 to force a decider.
The third game turned into a close contest, with both players fighting hard for every point. The score remained tight as the match approached its decisive moments.
Tanvi held her nerve under pressure and produced a composed performance to edge the Japanese shuttler 21-19. The victory secured her place in the final and guaranteed India a historic women's singles badminton medal at the Youth Olympic Games.

Tanvi now faces a formidable challenge in the gold-medal match against China's Yi Xin Zhang, the reigning World Junior Championships champion.
The two players have met once before, in the quarterfinals of the Asia Junior Championships earlier this year. On that occasion, Zhang defeated Tanvi 21-18, 21-16.
The previous result adds another dimension to the upcoming final, as Tanvi will look to turn the tables and finish her Youth Olympic campaign with a gold medal.
Historic achievement for Indian badminton
Tanvi's run to the final marks an important milestone for Indian badminton at the Youth Olympic Games. She is the first Indian woman to reach the women's singles final and has already secured the country's first medal in this category.
Indian shuttlers have previously enjoyed success at the competition. HS Prannoy won a silver medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, while Lakshya Sen finished runner-up at the 2018 edition in Buenos Aires.
Aditya Joshi also reached the boys' singles semifinals at the 2014 Games.
Tanvi has now added her name to this list of notable Indian performances. At just 15, she has an opportunity to achieve another milestone by becoming the first Indian to win Youth Olympic women's singles badminton gold.
Can Tanvi Patri win historic Youth Olympics gold?
With a place in the final secured and a medal already assured, Tanvi will now aim to deliver one more strong performance against China's Yi Xin Zhang.
The Indian teenager will need to draw on the confidence gained from her hard-fought semifinal victory, particularly her ability to stay composed in a closely contested deciding game.
A victory in the final would give India its first-ever Youth Olympic women's singles badminton gold and mark a memorable achievement in Tanvi Patri's young career.
