Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has acknowledged the crushing defeat suffered at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday. In the 20th match of IPL 2026, Royal Challengers Bangalore delivered a stellar performance to defeat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs.
Chasing a target of 241 runs set by RCB, MI could only manage to score 222 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. This marks Mumbai’s third defeat in four matches, while RCB has secured three victories in their four outings. Consequently, after suffering a hat-trick of defeats, Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya appeared visibly disappointed during the post-match presentation.
Hardik Lashes Out: Who Did He Hold Responsible?
Following Mumbai Indians’ defeat, Hardik Pandya placed the blame more on the bowling unit than on the batting unit. Speaking during the post-match presentation, Hardik stated:
“We lost too many wickets, and at the same time, I feel we conceded too many runs as well. I feel that we were constantly playing catch-up—always trying to level the playing field after falling behind. I believe that in the last few matches—whether as a bowling unit or a batting unit—instead of staying ahead in the game, we have consistently found ourselves trying to recover and catch up after falling behind.”
Despite Winning the Toss, Luck Eludes Mumbai
After winning the toss in the match, MI elected to bowl first, yet they still ended up on the losing side. A similar scenario was witnessed during their match against the Rajasthan Royals. When asked about the toss, Hardik remarked:
“We have won the toss in a few matches, but perhaps we need to re-evaluate what other options we have available to us, both as a batting unit and a bowling unit. Given the nature of the wickets we are playing on, it would be beneficial if we could put up a strong batting performance. We still need to play good cricket; we need to excel in both batting and bowling. If we manage to do that, the outcome of the toss will cease to matter, and we will be in a better position. Our performance in the Powerplay has been poor, and we may implement some significant changes in the upcoming match.”
Lavish praise for Sherfane Rutherford
Playing for MI, Sherfane Rutherford scored 71 runs off 31 balls, smashing 9 sixes in the process. Speaking about him, Hardik said:
