Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has booked his place in the final of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) 2026 after defeating Germany's Vincent Keymer 19-9 in the semi-final in the United States.

Praggnanandhaa sealed the semi-final victory before the scheduled blitz games were completed, ensuring that the subsequent results could not affect his qualification for the title clash.

Praggnanandhaa Beats Keymer 19-9

Praggnanandhaa established a commanding position by taking a 9-3 lead after winning the second classical game against Keymer. He maintained his advantage through the rapid section and secured his place in the final with three games still remaining.

Although Keymer won the next three blitz games, Praggnanandhaa's overall lead was already unassailable. He finished the semi-final with a 19-9 victory.

Praggnanandhaa to Face Defending Champion Caruana

In the other semi-final, American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana defeated compatriot Wesley So 18-12 to reach the final.

The result sets up an exciting title clash between Praggnanandhaa and defending champion Caruana on August 25.

The final will begin from 0-0, meaning neither player's semi-final score will carry forward. Praggnanandhaa will play the first classical game with the black pieces after the pre-final draw.

Final Format and Prize Money

The GCT final will begin with two classical games before moving into rapid and blitz games according to the tournament format.

The total prize pool for the final is $450,000. The winner will receive $200,000, while the runner-up and third-place finisher will earn $125,000 and $75,000, respectively.

The top three finishers will also receive direct invitations to the 2027 Grand Chess Tour.

Caruana will be aiming to successfully defend his GCT title, while Praggnanandhaa will be chasing his first Grand Chess Tour championship.
