IND vs WI 1st T20 Today: India Face West Indies in Lucknow, Vaibhav Suryavanshi Likely to Miss Out?

Posted on 6th Oct 2026 09:51 am by rohit kumar

Fresh from winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Pakistan, Team India will begin a five-match T20I series against the West Indies on Tuesday, October 6. The opening match will be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow from 7 PM IST.

India enter the series with strong momentum, having also won the recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies 2-1. However, the short turnaround from the Asian Games has created a selection challenge, particularly around the opening combination.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi vs Sanju Samson: Who Will Open?

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the first T20I is the place of 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

Suryavanshi opened alongside Abhishek Sharma during India's Asian Games campaign, while Sanju Samson batted at No. 3. However, the combination could change against the West Indies, with Ishan Kishan expected to be part of the middle order.

That leaves India with a selection dilemma involving Suryavanshi, Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Several predicted XIs have included Abhishek and Samson as the opening pair, which could leave Suryavanshi on the bench for the series opener.

However, his omission is not confirmed until the playing XI is announced at the toss.

Suryavanshi has already shown his ability at the international level and has an impressive T20I strike rate. India may therefore look to give him opportunities during the five-match series while also managing his workload carefully.

India Have Strong Record Against West Indies

India have played 31 T20Is against the West Indies, winning 20, while the Caribbean side have won 10. One match ended without a result. India also won the most recent meeting between the two teams, defeating West Indies by five wickets in the 2026 T20 World Cup Super Eight.

The first T20I will also be played at a venue where India have enjoyed considerable success. Their first T20I at the Ekana Stadium came against West Indies in November 2018, when India won by 71 runs. India have remained unbeaten in their T20Is at the Lucknow venue.

Ishan Kishan Eyes Another Big Performance

Ishan Kishan will be one of India's key batting attractions in the series opener.

Kishan has scored 1,005 T20I runs in 2026, becoming only the second Indian batter after Suryakumar Yadav to score at least 1,000 T20I runs in a calendar year. His strike rate during the year has been 169.47.

His record at the Ekana Stadium also makes him a player to watch. India will hope his aggressive batting can provide momentum in the middle order against the West Indies attack.

West Indies Will Look to Hetmyer for Firepower

West Indies will rely heavily on their powerful batting unit, with Shimron Hetmyer among the players expected to pose a major threat.

The Caribbean side will also be encouraged by their recent performance in the ODI series, despite India winning the three-match contest 2-1. West Indies won the final ODI in a high-scoring contest after India posted a huge total.

The visitors have plenty of T20 experience and will look to challenge India's strong batting and bowling combination in the opening match.

India vs West Indies 1st T20: Pitch Report

The match will be played at Lucknow's Ekana Cricket Stadium, where conditions can vary depending on the surface and how it behaves during the evening.

The pitch is expected to offer a contest between bat and ball, with the surface potentially slowing down as the match progresses. Spinners could have a role in the middle overs, while batters will look to make maximum use of the powerplay.

Recent reports have suggested that the pitch could provide opportunities for stroke-makers, although the large boundaries at Ekana can also make boundary-hitting challenging.

Lucknow Weather: Rain Unlikely

Weather conditions are expected to be favourable for the opening T20I.

Forecasts indicate only a low probability of rain in Lucknow during the match, meaning supporters can expect a largely uninterrupted contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 PM IST, with the toss expected around 6:30 PM.
