IND vs NZ 3rd T20I: Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Open or Bat at No. 3?

Posted on 27th Oct 2026 10:24 am by rohit kumar

India will face New Zealand in the third T20I of the five-match series at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on October 27. After winning the first two matches in Christchurch, India lead the series 2–0 and have an opportunity to secure an unassailable advantage.

The change of venue brings a fresh challenge, with Wellington known for its swirling winds and relatively short square boundaries. Wind gusts of up to 55 km/h were reported on the eve of the match, although conditions were expected to ease slightly. The weather and pitch could influence team strategies, shot selection and fielding.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s batting position will be one of the key talking points ahead of the third T20I. With wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan ruled out as he continues recovering from a right adductor strain, Sooryavanshi is expected to retain his place in India’s playing XI.

The teenager batted at No. 3 in the second T20I but scored just four runs off eight deliveries. He will be keen to make a stronger contribution in Wellington if given another opportunity in the same position.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are expected to continue as India’s opening pair. Samson’s aggressive batting and Abhishek’s ability to provide quick starts could be important as India look to maintain their winning momentum.

India Look to Improve Their Bowling

Although India have won both opening matches while chasing, their bowling remains an area to watch. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has conceded 99 runs in eight overs across the first two T20Is, taking one wicket. The experienced pacer will be looking to deliver a more economical spell in Wellington.

India’s bowling group will need to adapt to the conditions and avoid giving New Zealand easy scoring opportunities. Bowling coach Morne Morkel has also stressed the importance of improving execution as the team settles into the tour.

Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner Key to New Zealand’s Hopes

New Zealand will be eager to stay alive in the series after losing the first two matches. Glenn Phillips has been a major contributor with the bat, scoring more than 150 runs across the opening games, and will remain an important player for the hosts.

Captain Mitchell Santner could also play a decisive role with his left-arm spin. New Zealand’s spinners have taken eight wickets in the series, compared with four wickets for their fast bowlers, making spin a significant factor for India’s batting line-up.

New Zealand will also have to manage changes to their pace attack. Matt Henry has been ruled out for the remainder of the series, while Lockie Ferguson is unavailable for the Wellington match. Their replacements and the performance of the remaining bowlers could prove important against India’s deep batting order.

Wellington Pitch Report and Weather Update

Hnry Stadium, also known as the Cake Tin, has square boundaries of approximately 60 metres. These dimensions can reward well-timed pull shots and cuts, but strong winds may make high catches and aerial shots more difficult to judge.

The fresh surface could offer some early assistance to fast bowlers. However, the venue has also produced successful run-chases, so the toss decision will depend on the pitch, weather and conditions at the time of the match.

Gusts reaching around 55 km/h were reported before the game, with winds expected to ease somewhat on match day. Rain was also part of the forecast, although previews indicated that conditions could improve before the scheduled evening start. These forecasts should not be treated as a guarantee of conditions throughout the match.

Note: These are predicted line-ups, not confirmed playing XIs. Final teams are announced at the toss.

Can India Seal the Series in Wellington?

India enter the third T20I with confidence after winning the opening two games, but the team will want a more consistent performance with the ball. Sooryavanshi’s role, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s response and New Zealand’s spin attack are among the key factors to watch.

For New Zealand, the match is an opportunity to reduce the deficit and revive their hopes of winning the series. With challenging wind conditions and two teams looking to improve, the Wellington contest could offer another competitive chapter in the five-match T20I series.
