Orient Cables made a strong debut on the stock exchanges on Monday, October 5, with its shares listing at a premium of more than 65% over the IPO issue price.
The Orient Cables share price opened at ₹450 on the NSE, compared with the IPO price of ₹272, translating into a 65.44% listing gain. On the BSE, the stock listed at ₹448.10, a premium of 64.74%.
However, the strong debut was followed by sharp volatility. After touching an intraday high of ₹464.85, Orient Cables shares fell to ₹405, where they hit the 10% lower circuit. Even at ₹405, the stock remained nearly 49% above its IPO issue price.
Orient Cables IPO Listing Price
The Orient Cables IPO was priced in the range of ₹258-₹272 per share, with the upper end of the price band used for the final issue price.
The stock's listing prices were:
Exchange Listing Price Premium to IPO Price
NSE ₹450 65.44%
BSE ₹448.10 64.74%
Following the listing, Orient Cables' market capitalisation stood at approximately ₹5,099 crore, according to exchange data.
Orient Cables IPO Received Strong Investor Response
The strong listing followed heavy demand during the IPO subscription period.
The ₹552-crore Orient Cables IPO was open from September 25 to September 29. The issue comprised a fresh issue of around ₹320 crore and an offer for sale of approximately ₹232 crore.
The IPO received subscription of 92.27 times according to the subscription data reported by The Economic Times, with particularly strong demand from institutional and non-institutional investors.
The strong subscription was one of the factors that helped create expectations of a solid listing.
Where Will Orient Cables Use the IPO Money?
A portion of the proceeds from the fresh issue will be used to strengthen the company's manufacturing capabilities.
According to the IPO documents, the company plans to use the funds for capital expenditure, including the purchase of machinery and equipment and civil works at its manufacturing facilities. A portion of the proceeds is also earmarked for repayment of certain borrowings and general corporate purposes.
The IPO therefore provides capital for both expansion and balance-sheet requirements.
What Does Orient Cables Do?
Orient Cables is a cable and interconnection-solutions company serving multiple infrastructure and technology-related industries.
Its product portfolio includes networking cables and other cable solutions used in areas such as telecommunications, broadband, data centres, renewable energy and enterprise networking.
The company's exposure to networking and digital infrastructure has been one of the factors attracting investor attention as demand for data connectivity and related infrastructure continues to grow.
Orient Cables Share Price: What Happened After Listing?
The listing-day performance has been particularly volatile.
After opening at ₹450 on the NSE, Orient Cables shares initially moved higher and touched ₹464.85. However, the stock subsequently reversed sharply and fell to ₹405, triggering the lower circuit.
This means investors who received shares in the IPO were still sitting on a substantial gain versus the ₹272 issue price, but those who bought at or near the listing price faced a significant intraday decline.
The move highlights the risk of treating a strong IPO listing as a guarantee of sustained post-listing gains.
Should Orient Cables IPO Investors Book Profit or Hold?
The answer depends on an investor's investment objective, risk tolerance, purchase price and assessment of the company's future earnings.
For investors who participated primarily for listing gains, the sharp premium at which the stock debuted may prompt them to evaluate whether to realise part or all of their gains according to their own strategy.
For long-term investors, the more important factors are likely to be the company's revenue and profit growth, margins, order book, capacity expansion, debt levels and valuation after the listing.
The stock's sharp reversal on the first trading day also shows why investors should not base a long-term investment decision solely on the IPO listing premium.
Orient Cables IPO: Strong Listing, But Volatility Remains
Orient Cables delivered a 65.44% premium listing on the NSE, significantly exceeding the expectations indicated by pre-listing grey-market trends.
However, the subsequent fall to ₹405 and the lower circuit demonstrate that the stock can be highly volatile immediately after listing.
For investors, the key question now shifts from “How much did Orient Cables gain on listing?” to “Can the company's earnings and business growth justify the post-listing valuation?”
That answer will depend on the company's financial performance and execution over the coming quarters rather than its first-day listing gain.
